I found this series totally pointless. While well produced and with a coherent story, I just didn't see any point to producing a story like this. Additionally, I felt that his time in captivity was portrayed as far to nice. Being 16-years old, kidnapped for months, physically hurt and plied with drugs and alcohol must have been traumatic as hell. Just reading his Wikipedia page gave me a totally different picture compared to the series. Yet based on this show it seems like his kidnappers are a few horrible people, but otherwise mostly "good" people doing desperate things. Yeah... Forgive me for not sympathising.
Well, that is my take-away, however I watched it with my mother and she quite liked it. So this is my very subjective opinion ;)
