You know, I'm not really into animated shows or movies.
I play many games but League of Legends isn't something I'm interested in.
When I saw this on Netflix, I thought "well not for me".
Boy, was I wrong.
After reading many articles, I decided I should give it a try and launched the first episode.
And the second, and the third and so on and on.
I was blown away. I am still blown away.
The story is great, and far reaching. I know nothing of league of legends, didn't need to.
The setting, this steampunk/victorian/magical world is so unique.
The characters are full of life, full of emotions, doubts. They are not empty shells but full on humans/humanoids. More so than many live-action characters.
The graphics and animation are the most amazing I've had the pleasure to witness. I mean, every scene is grandiose. Like moving paintings. What a feast for the eyes.
And last (but not least), the music is perfect. The main title by imagine dragons is on point, and the score complements the story so well. Case in point, many scenes don't have any dialogue, the animation and the score being sufficient.
Emotions are high at the end, I can't wait for what's in store next year.
Please, please, please, do watch it. Even if games are not your things, even if League of Legends isn't. Even if animated video aren't.
Watch it.
Ok, that's going to be a hard one to review.
Not because it's bad or just ok, not at all. As the little "10" in the top-left shows, I've give this show the best possible score.
No, the difficulty is in finding the right words that will explain WHY this tv show deserve such a number.
Before getting into it, I must say that I've watched every episodes, including the special where the actors and crew explain how and why they did this show (you should watch it). And I have not read the book.
As I want this review to be read by as much people as possible, I will not give any spoiler. So feel free to continue reading !
First, the actors, and mainly the three main characters for me, meaning Dylan Minnette (Clay), Katherine Langford (Hannah) and Kate Walsh (Olivia, Hannah's mom). Their work is just astonishing.
Second, the pacing. The show find the right balance between content and emptiness. Seems weird writing this. But we're dealing with a suicide, with depression, and the void it creates is one of the hardest thing to translate and the producers found a way to make you feel it at your core.
Which explains my third point : this show can be overwhelming. 13 episodes that you want to watch, but you also dread watching. There is, in each of those episodes and even more in some of them, a psychological pressure that can almost be too much to bear.
Fourth, thriller. 13 reasons why. 13 reasons you want to know. 13 reasons that you discover slowly, methodically, but 13 reasons that are sometimes implied a bit before they're revealed. It creates a thrill, that you're on the verge of understanding or at least zeroing on what really when on.
Fifth, the candor of this show. I have never watched a a show that committed to being true, to ring true to how teenagers think and feel and live. Some people will think that things aren't really like that, that they can't be and it's just so that there is a story. I was a teenager not so long ago, and I found so many truths in this show that it even felt a bit awkward. That this character could have been me. Or this one.
When TV produces so many "teenage" shows that just transform teens into adults, or teens into dumb versions of humans, watching this felt surreal. Like someone finally understood what it meant. What the struggles were and how to show them in their purest form.
Sixth and last one, Suicide. No one wants to talk about it. Most TV shows that depicts one, uses it as a plot excuse. A way to spice things up.
This one does not. This is the first thing you learn when watching. You start with the suicide and then you try to explain what when on in Hannah's life, in her head, that made her do this. And the show is clear, you can't explain suicide. You can't rationalize it. But you can try to understand the actions and thoughts that lead to it. To try and prevent that for ever happening again.
And the show is exceptional at that. Yes it depicts all the elements that lead to a suicide, but by showing them, you also teach people how to recognize signs that could point you to a person in distress. And it also shows that our actions have consequences, may those actions seems trivial at first. And to those that are in distress it also shows that there always are people caring for you. You may not see it, they may not show it, but there are there and you need to have the strength to at least reach out to them. The will help you. And if this seems too much for you, there are free hotlines that you can call at any time to at least talk. Because talking is healing.
I could continue and expand this list much more, but I'll stop there.
Just go watch it. Take a month of Netflix, you won't regret it.
Such an amazing episode!
John Lithgow who plays Churchill showed all the talent he has in portraying the conflicted and complex character that is Churchill in all the previous episodes but in this one, which use most of its time on him, it was something else, something more profound. It was an actor completely merging with its character, giving it life to a point where you forget you're watching a show.
Bravo to him, Bravo to the writers and Bravo to Churchill
So I'm french, and I'm a canal+ subscriber (the network behind this tv show) but I completely missed this serie when it was on air...
And then two days ago I see a amazing score for "the returned" on both metacritic and rotten tomatoes ans I was "I know that poster, and I know that synopsis"
And then it strikes me! It's "les revenants" Yeah, I've seen dozens of ads in the subway last year...
So in the end I've started watching it and I'm really happy I didn't miss it completely.
It's dark, it's almost suffocating. But it's amazing. It gives me a bit of hope for the future of french tv.
A must see!
Yep, this ils getting nowhere... And even if it was going somewhere, there're so much things that just dont work... Like those irathiens, why do they have To speak another language? Why do they have to look like sh$t? You can't have simpathy or empathy for them the way they are...
And what about all those borderline stupid characters?...
The only good thing about this show is the opening credits that are far more better than any episode!
I'm sorry but it started well, and now I'm not even sure if I want to see the next episode...
I mean there's suppose to be a storyline there but I dont really get it.
And they really love clichés...
Pilot was good and the next two episodes were too but that's it, episode 4 was a turn in the wrong direction. Don't follow that road to much or you won't be able to come back...
Just wow !
You have to like political intrigue to watch this show, but if you do, you're in for an incredible story with amazing actors (Kevin Spacey is breathtaking)
I've taken a Netflix account just for this show, and that's certains the best 8 bucks I've spend in a long time !
Not nearly as good as Primeval the original serie :(
I've only watched the first two ep. so i'll update my statement if it turns out to be better.
I can't believe I've had this show in my library for more than a year and I've only recently started watching it... One of my biggest mistake regarding tv shows...
This show is just amazing! You just care about all the characters, nothing is black and white, a character you hate one instant can become your favorite in an episode time, you can go from laughter to tears in a matter of minutes. The stories are so well written they just seem so real. And the actors are just perfect. I don't think there is one I don't like, not event one with room for improvement. This is one of the best casting I've seen in a lot of time.
Everyone should just watch it, it is one of the best show I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of them.
And I'm normally not a big fan of tv shows set in the past.
It's really hard after watching it to go back to newer and lighter shows. They just seem dull...
