Rape and revenge films (aka rape/revenge, rape-revenge) are a subgenre of exploitation film that was particularly popular in the 1970s. Rape/revenge movies generally follow the same three act structure: a woman is raped/gang raped, tortured, and left for dead; the woman survives and rehabilitates herself, and the woman takes revenge and kills her rapist(s).

In some cases, the woman is killed at the end of the first act, and the "revenge" is carried out by her family, as in The Virgin Spring, I Saw the Devil, and the original The Last House on the Left, which was inspired by the former movie. The Virgin Spring is particularly notable as being arguably the first in the genre as well as being directed by Ingmar Bergman.

This list is drawn from the second edition of "The New York Times Guide to the Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made", published in 2004. It contains a selection of 1000 reviews that have been printed in The New York Times in a time period of over seven decades. The majority of movies in this book are among the "10 Best Films" chosen by New York Times critics at the end of each year.

The 2013 version of TSPDT’s 1,000 Greatest Films is finally here. After months of stop-start, data-building and unhealthy calculation antics, the latest group of 1,000 movie offerings has been assembled once again for your pleasure (or displeasure). Depending on your observation skills, you may have already noticed that there is a new presentation for this ongoing project.

We love Bad Movies nearly as much as we love Horror. Sometimes, when we're in the mood, we may even love them more.

There's just something deeply satisfying about watching a movie that tries so hard to get everything right, fail miserably in every single aspect, to the point of pain. There's no way that you can watch Vanilla Ice try to act in Cool as Ice and not be in tears; or watch Lou Ferrigno tying rubber cobras together while telling them "Hey, be nice!" in Sinbad of the Seven Seas, and not die laughing; and there's no way in hell that you can watch The Room and not wonder "Does it get any worse than this?"

Most of the movies below are so horrible and inept, that they defy all logical explanation, and they're all crazy enjoyable on a level that we can't even begin to explain.

Not all of these movies are going to be easy find. We've had to watch many of them ourselves on used VHS tapes.
Amazon is a great place to buy a copy of many of these movies, but as most of them are sold through 3rd party sellers, be sure to read their user reviews to make sure they deliver what they promise, and for a reasonable price.
You can also watch a lot of these movies on YouTube, even if the quality isn't that great.
We include the MST3K version of Pod People here, because we can’t find the normal version of the movie to watch, and it’s an A+ episode.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you truly love Bad Movies, then the movies in our Top Six will give you endless amounts of pleasure... and pain. Start with whichever one you like, but watch them all, as they are truly Bad Movie gems of the highest order.

For the remaining:

For the record, many of the movies beyond the Top Six are absolutey classic too. The Apple, Cage, Hard Rock Zombies, Ninja of the Magnificence, Pod People, Rock n' Roll Nightmare, The Room, Sinbad of the Seven Seas, and Space Mutiny are all brilliant in their atrociousness.

Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks, and in this case, great flicks of a particular type.

The last 6 being "Honorable Mentions".

Backwoods Horror movies come in many different varieties, but being chased through the woods by inbred, homicidal maniacs is definitely at the core of this tried and true sub-genre. Of course sometimes it can be Neo-Nazis doing the chasing, or maybe even a monster; and sometimes the action takes place on a mountain or even in a single cabin; but there are always somehow woods involved. They kinda have to be.

No matter the setting or menace though, Backwoods Horror is wildly compelling, because who doesn't fear being lost in the boonies while death is breathing down your neck?

There are plenty of Slasher flicks that are technically Backwoods Horror, but we didn't include them here because they got their own list, and there are plenty true Backwoods Horror movies out there that deserve the attention.
When it comes to Backwoods Horror flicks, we implore you to check out some of the lesser known titles like Frontiere(s), Rabies, or Rovdyr, if you're looking for something "new" and a bit different.
Also, don't sleep on The Tourist Trap. Truly creepy stuff.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Backwoods Horror flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For our money, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Wolf Creek are probably the best of them, but then again they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Backwoods Sub-Genre, so enjoy them all!

For the remaining:

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Backwoods Horror flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

We are absolute suckers for a good Horror Documentary. We love knowing what went into making them, what the actors thought about starring in them, and discovering all of the little (and sometimes big) things that went on behind the scenes. Even if we're not big fans of a movie or its series, we always seem to love watching Docs about them.

There are a ton of Horror Docs out there; many of them come in the form of shorter "Making of" and "Behind the Scenes" featurettes on Blu-ray & DVD releases, but the ones that we love the most usually tend to be full-length efforts that delve as deep as they can into their subject matter. Of course, some of them are no more than countdowns or celebrations of the years of Horror past. Some of them are even about real-life Horrors.

No matter their topic, most Horror Documentaries are enjoyable to watch, and they usually teach us something new.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Horror Documentary, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For us, Crystal Lake Memories, Never Sleep Again, and More Brains are the absolute best of them (because they are so jam-packed with content, and were every bit a fun to watch as the movies that inspired them), but they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Horror Documentary Sub-Genre.

Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments isn’t currently available to buy, but it usually pops up on TV in October, so keep your eyes out, and your DVR’s ready.
Halloween: The Inside Story can be bought through Amazon.UK, or you can try to catch it if it airs on TV sometime this Fall. Same goes for the Jaws and Silence of the Lambs Docs below.
Terror in the Aisles is available as a Special Feature on the Halloween II Blu-ray.

For the remaining:

When we think of Slasher Flicks, we mainly think of masked killers, blood, clever kills, and promiscuous teens in various stages of undress; because that's what they are, for the most part. There are plenty of Slashers that offer more than just visceral thrills though, giving us things like atmosphere, tension, genuine terror, levity, and even solid stories that help fray our nerves in different and clever ways.

No matter what variety they come in though, the Slasher Flick is an important staple in the Horror Genre, and one that most Horror Fanatics tend to embrace with open arms.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Slasher Flick, any of the Classic movies in our Top Six will do you right. All 6 of them are true Classics for a reason; they changed the Horror Genre as a whole, each to different degrees, and they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to a Sub-Genre that is usually dismissed as being nothing more than a vehicle for cheap thrills.

For the remaining:

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Slasher Flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

There's something about a ship full of people in deep space who find themselves set upon by some malevolent force, that makes us smile like fools. Alien started it all for us, and years later it was Event Horizon that re-invigorated our love for Horror flicks set it space, but there are others out there that are just about as good, even if a lot of them are not purely Horror.

There just aren't a lot of Horror movies set in space, and so we had to be a bit liberal with the titles that we included on this list. Below, you'll find a few movies that lean more towards the Sci-Fi side of things, as well as a few that are straight-up B-movies. We even included Hellraiser: Bloodlines here, because it featured Cenobites in Space.

It's a small list that takes some liberty with boundaries, but Space Horror is a tiny sub-genre that we love, and so we felt that it deserved a bit of recognition.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Space Horror Flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. Alien and Event Horizon are probably our all-time faves, but then they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Space Sub-Genre.

Witches are as synonymous with Halloween as are pumpkins and black cats, and so with October rapidly approaching, we got to thinking about Witch movies, and how great they can be when done right.

Some movie Witches are benevolent and use their powers for good, but in the Horror Genre, most tend to be wizened old crones who are out to kill or eat people, or even worse, take their souls. Most Witches serve Satan you see, so sacrifice is a big part of their daily lives.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Witch flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For our money, Suspiria and Black Sunday are probably the best of them, but then again they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Witch Flick Sub-Genre, so why not just enjoy them all!

For the remaining:

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Witch flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

As nasty and terrifying as Horror movies are in general, they can also be a bit absurd to a point. When a movie comes along and decides to play on that absurdity for laughs, the results are often a thing of beauty... when done right, of course.

In their own way, Horror Comedies can be every bit as satisfying of a watch as standard Horror flicks are, and sometimes, even more so.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Horror Comedy, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For our money, Black Sheep and What We Do in the Shadows are probably the funniest of them, but then again they all bring their own unique and humorous vision to the Horror Comedy Sub-Genre.

There's something terrifying as hell about a viral outbreak which turns everyone around you into monsters that want to kill you, eat you, or assimilate you. The Walking Dead (which is not on this list, but is relative to our point) is the most popular show on TV for a reason, folks, and that reason is that pandemics, whether large or small, prey on our most primal of fears: that the world around us can go to hell at any minute.

Walking STDs; hordes of infected humans; killer mutant sheep; viral demons; flesh-eating bacteria; or even alien slugs that are determined to take over the world; the movies on this Best of Viral/Infected Horror list are sure to give you nightmares. Or even daymares. Some of them are really that scary.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Viral/Infected Horror flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For our money, [REC] and 28 Days Later are probably the best of them, but then again they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Viral/Infected Sub-Genre.

Someone recently asked us if we could recommend any Haunted House or Supernatural movies along the lines of 1408, The Shining, or Rose Red for them to watch, which got us to thinking that we should just make a list of the 30 or so of the best Haunted House flicks that we've seen.

Then we got to thinking about what qualifies a movie as a "Haunted House" movie? Well, a house that is haunted by a spirit of entity is the main thing, but you could stretch the definition to include plenty of other settings & plots as well; technically, Alien (1979) could be considered a Haunted House movie, at least insofar as its mechanics are concerned. The Evil Dead is technically a Haunted House movie too... but then again, it's really more of a possession flick, right?

We will try to keep this list as “Pure” as possible, but keep in mind that some movies can easily fit into two or more sub-genres, so there will be a certain amount of flexibility about it.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Haunted House flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For us, Session 9 is the best of them, but they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Haunted House Sub-Genre.

Note: Two of the films were not on the IMDB, therefore not added. They will be added soon though

The 100+ Most Controversial Films of All-Time: Films always have the ability to anger us, divide us, shock us, disgust us, and more. Usually, films that inspire controversy, outright boycotting, picketing, banning, censorship, or protest have graphic sex, violence, homosexuality, religious, political or race-related themes and content. They usually push the envelope regarding what can be filmed and displayed on the screen, and are considered taboo, "immoral" or "obscene" due to language, drug use, violence and sensuality/nudity or other incendiary elements. Inevitably, controversy helps to publicize these films and fuel the box-office receipts.

Controversy-invoking films may be from almost any genre - documentaries, westerns, erotic-thrillers, dramas, horror, comedy, or animated, and more. Standards for what may be considered shocking, offensive or controversial have changed drastically over many decades. From the earliest silent films, to the gunfights in early 30s gangster films, to the mid-60s countercultural changes when the ratings were modified, to current day bloodbaths, violence in films has always stirred controversy. The voluntary ratings system of the Motion Picture Association of America can influence a film's public showing in a theatre -- an NC-17 rating or an unrated film may often close down a film's screening and lead to commercial failure.

The Berlin International Film Festival (Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin), also called the Berlinale, is one of the world's leading film festivals and most reputable media events. It is held annually in Berlin, Germany. The Golden Bear (Goldener Bär) is the highest prize awarded for the best film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The bear is the heraldic animal of Berlin, featured on both the coat of arms and flag of Berlin.

The winners of the first Berlin International Film Festival in 1951 were determined by a German panel, and there were five winners of the Golden Bear, divided by categories and genres. Between 1952 and 1955, the winners of the Golden Bear were determined by the audience members. In 1956, the FIAPF (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films) formally accredited the festival, and since then the Golden Bear has been awarded by an international jury.

Prior to the establishment of UK state censorship implemented in the Video Recordings Act of 1984, censorship was in the realms of the courts and the Obscene Publications Act. This required the courts to apply the test of whether videos were likely to "deprave and corrupt" the viewer. The Director Of Public Prosecutions (DPP) maintained a list of those videos that were felt likely to be found obscene by the courts and hence worthwhile prosecuting.
Of course, the real drivers behind the moral panic were the UK press led by the ever obnoxious Daily Mail. Not to mention a few politicians who felt they could make a name for themselves.

Several versions of the video nasty list were published with videos added and removed over the period 1983-1985. 72 videos were listed at least for a while. Another couple of films can stake a claim via a shared name with listed films. 39 made it through to the end, and these became known as the DPP39s. These 39 titles became the most sought after collectibles.
