This has been the show's most uneven season, although its highs make me slightly prefer it over 1, but they save the best for the last. In fact, it feels like they first had this endgame of everyone rising above Rick in mind (after a brilliant S3 pushed his mindset to the limit, that some retreat is needed if the show is to be sustained), and then struggled to pave the way in individual episodes to there. But I love how the finale ties it all together (including from past seasons as well), in addition to being a great, family-dynamics-advancing R&M episode in general; one of my faves of the show.
