You just had to touch the ocean
They came out swinging! Rick and Morty is back!
aight. I'm watching again.
absolutely loved it!
After last season's finale, I was curious to see the family dynamics towards Rick changing, but I guess they wanted a welcome-back-into-the-world premiere first, which, ok, is fun enough, but firmly within the show's comfortable margin. Still very enjoyable on a joke-per-minute basis though, and I get a kick out of Rick's nemesis being a pervy Aquaman.
We finally arrived at season 5 and R&M is still going strong! I mean holy shit! Where else can you get this amount of chaos, tragedy, comedy and action packed into only 20 minutes! Absolutely brilliant!
[7.5/10] A nice start to the new season. Rick and Morty has a way of finding the funniest take on sturdy sci-fi tropes. The “realm where time passes more quickly” is a classic premise for speculative fiction, and the episode uses it to its full potential in twenty-two short minutes.
The simple way Rick tries to use the realm to age wine, while Morty retrieving that wine spins out of control until he’s the bete noire of that realm, is hilarious. The show gets really creative in the different stages of the dog people each time Morty visits, and the impact each new Morty visit has. Seeing things go from primitive cultures, to renaissance, to cyberpunk and places in between, each centered on/opposed to fighting Morty makes for a bunch of fun set pieces.
I also enjoyed Rick’s interactions with Mr. Nimbus. It’s the comparatively down-to-earth sort of ridiculousness that this show does well. Nimbus is a delightfully silly character, and his existence as Rick’s boastful “nemesis” makes him especially amusing. His fish-related shtick and ability to control police rather than sea life are appropriately ridiculous. Honestly, just his whole ridiculous demeanor is a treat.
The only element of this one that didn’t really work for me is Beth and Jerry consider a threesome with Mr. Nimbus. There’s a few mild laughs as they psyche themselves up for it, but for the most part, it’s just a slight and inessential part of the episode.
Despite that, there’s a lot of good laughs here. Mr. Nimbus’ repetition of his name is a running gag that brings the yuks each time. Rick dismissing the Narnia comparison with “I’m not a beaver who believes in Jesus Christ” cracked me the hell up. And the comic banter with everyone remains on point. Plus I have to tell you, it’s the dumbest joke, but “Nintendo 69” got a laugh out of me, so I can’t look askance at it.
But there’s some of that sincere character work amid all the chuckles. Morty realizing he has to stand up for himself sometimes, even if it means being an asshole, isn’t the most family-friendly lesson, but it gives him a mini-arc here, so that’s something. The show finds a creative way to actually move his crush on Jessica forward for a bit, while maintaining the status quo, and there’s something both meta and sad about the “Guess we just never found the right time” theme behind the premise.
Amid all the silliness with Rick and Mr. Nimbus, the idea that they were actually friends, that Nimbus knew Rick’s wife Dianne, and that they’ve both turned into shells of their former self (no pun intended) carries a certain resonance with it. For such a goofy episode, Nimbus saving Rick and Morty’s behinds is strangely heartening.
Overall, this one brings the usual loopy take on a traditional sci-fi premise that Rick and Morty is known for, with the subtle character work and insane sense of humor that distinguishes the show’s tone and approach. A nice way to drop back into the series.
Out of all the jokes I found myself laughing when Rick was like "get the wine Morty, goddamn", cause I too have let out many annoyed and frustrated "goddamns" at simple tasks in life. Mr Nimbus I can tell will very many rule 34 about him, especially when gets even more beefed up near the very end of the episode, and the whole cock-up cascade with Morty and jumping dimensions to age the wine, friggin' comedy gold
this was a great opening I love how this show just reveals mythology that is just made up on the spot and they will probably never go back to
we get introduced to Mr nimbus very much a a parody on submariner from marvel comics
with a great secondary story of Morty becoming a urban legend then a epic legend then a boogeyman eventually a deity to this culture home to span of like 20 minutes lmao
You just had to touch the ocean
Such a fun episode. Having sex with a Nintendo system is mentioned more than once as well a Nintendo sex porn channel lol. Morty starting a war with dog creatures every time he gets a bottle of wine from another dimension was great.
Mr. Nimbus, Rick arch enemy Merman scenes were great too.
WTF.
WHAT DID I JUST WATCH?
ALL IN JUST 20 MINUTES??!
This show is the best thing that ever happened in my life.
I love how this show touches so many sensitive topics (porn addiction, global warming etc) while keeping it funny.
Best episode since the vat of acid
Great start of the new season.
Summer is everything wrong with this show at the moment, why’s she so weird?
I feel like every inch of this plot is good and engaging, super funny and weird. Just like Rick and Morty should be. The Jessica ending was a little annoying though haha
I love mr nimbus and i thought they were gonna be exes lol
i liked the time people that was fun
Very solid premiere. The visuals this episode really stood out to me for some reason, maybe it was given more time than the average episode. Loved the character and Mr. Nimbus and his dynamic with Rick was super fun. Morty's plotline was also great, it really tickled my stupid-sci-fi-concepts-being-pushed-super-far bone. Really wish the rest of the season maintained this quality.
It's good to be back lol.
That was so good and so weird :joy: the morty portal story line was soo good and hilarious, the morty Jessica stuff was funny and also great, the Rick and nimbus stuff was interesting, nimbus mentioned Diane which was cool, and finally the weird Beth and Jerry C plot, what the fuck? So far season 5 feels different from the first 3 seasons, but it’s also different from season 4, it’s like a mix of them both and it kinda works. The weird sex stuff is super weird though lmao
Can't wait to see this...and, "My Dinner With Andre," used to be my favorite movie. Although, now that I think into this a little more -- should I be worried that it'll all take place around the dinner table, with no cutaways (just two People having a conversation)?
And, now I notice the picture to the left (Morty wide-eyed at a dinner table). Yow!
