Martin isn't a pedophile, and Julia doesn't trust him. She may be arrogant in thinking she can best him, but she absolutely doesn't trust him.
Also, you aren't really the decider for what trauma is 'worse' or 'better' than another. Watching people you love die, and then being violently raped, would be pretty high on most peoples' lists of 'worst things that can happen to them'.

I love how the shows started, but finale was utterly disappointing. The Finale of the first season was pretty much ridiculous, doesn't she realize that she is trusting the person that could do something worse to her than rape? He is a pedophile! And she is supposed to be smart!
