I remember watching this episode on first broadcast back in the '90s. Although it didn't make me give up on the series (that would come later), I clearly remember thinking, "hmm, Voyager really is a terrible show," and from here on out I never quite managed to connect with it again.
This is a cliché-ridden attempt at a serious prison story that comes off as nothing but pathetic and causes extreme eye-rolling. The characters are jokes and the progression of the story is painfully predictable. The only part of it I have good things to say about is Garret Wang's decent acting.
