@phoenix-calypso I guess that is because uhtred must remain unwritten in history.
@phoenix-calypso I assume Uhtred's gesture of giving the throne to Aethelflead would be seen as meaningless if they marry, because it still looks like they're ruling together.... regardless of whether it's the truth or not, the people will still likely believe it to be the truth.

I don't understand: when Uthred decided that Æthelflæd should reign, why can't they marry rather than she stays chaste? I mean since Uthred wants her to reign he will not try to take the throne! Then they would have a heir that could rule after her.
