Stargate SG-1: Season 1

1x08 The Nox

This episode marks a somewhat important point in Stargate lore, but I honestly don't think it's a great episode. It has a welcome guest star in Armin Shimmerman, and the Nox themselves are fun to meet. However, it's all very sedate and the threat from Apophis and his Jaffa feels pretty weak. It's not bad by any means, I just feel like it's importance has been overstated. That mostly comes down to how often its referenced going forward.

  • As I said, the Nox are quite lovely to hang out with and I think that comes down to good casting choices. All the actors do really well in fairy silly roles.
  • I love Carter's smile when Nafrayu introduces himself to her (and O'Neill's reaction to it).
  • Apophis has a cool new piece of technology, a personal shield. Still, I don't find him to be at all threatening.
  • For all the issues I had with the pacing and mood of the episode, the central message from the Nox is quite lovely.
  • A couple of years after this episode, a video game by Westwood called Nox was released. In my head, I've always imagined that the game was based on this episode. It's not, of course.
