This is closer to Laurel and Hardy than to Star Trek. I can't even claim that it is a parody of Star Trek. They don't exaggeratedly push this show in one direction, for some simple jokes.
These producers and writers seriously believe that this is modern sci-fi. And that these protagonists represent the best and smartest humanity and aliens have to offer. Which is about as realistic as these writer ever winning a Nobel Prize in Literature.
