Oh man, the parallels between this and "Code of Honor" (Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x04) are heavy. The two episodes even share a writer, and I take it this one is regarded about as poorly as its Trek counterpart…

I can't say I disliked this one, honestly. It's terribly uncomfortable to watch Carter be treated the way she is, of course, but that doesn't mean it's bad writing. "Emancipation" at least manages to avoid the worst of the racial subtext in which "Code of Honor" wallowed. No one had to pull a deus ex transporter this time, and the Earth humans' interference might actually leave some lasting positive impact on this planet. Unlike the Ligonians, the Shavadai seem receptive to the idea that their sexist ways are outdated.

What I would like to know is: How do the not-really-aliens on Simarka all know English? The Stargate universe doesn't have the magical Universal Translator tech to fall back on; it's set in the present day, at time of broadcast.
