@deoxys Bill Lawrence explained this a few times. There was a lot of doubt that the show would be renewed for a seventh season, so that season six would effectively be the end of the show. He wanted to give Laverne a big send-off just in case.
Then, of course, the show not only got renewed for a seventh season, but ABC swooped in to give it an eighth season, so the Shirley character was created to bring Aloma Wright back.
