Luca 2021

I generally think the LGBT community calls everything gay. Vampires, Gay. Werewolves, Gay. Banshees, Gay. You could make a story about a lightpost and someone would point out how perfectly that object which generates light for us to get by is a perfect metaphor for some aspect of being gay. So people saying Luca is a gay movie just waiting to happen. I shrug it off. It means nothing. Not that gay people should or do care what I think.

That said. Having seen the movie. I see it. In any one of maybe three directions this becomes an explicitly gay story. Some of the dialog choices and reveals in the end seem especially designed to cater to that. But regardless of what it may or may not stand for it's a pretty basic animated tale. A charming good time. It has great character design, excellent animation it just lacks a bit of the creative spark to elevate it to a hit as either a movie about gay boys or about boys who are friends. Thankfully even when Pixar isn't running on all cylindars they're at least extremely competent. I wouldn't even bother to get a free Funko Pop of any of these characters but I'd certainly watch it again one day.
