While I liked "The Revenant", I didn't find it to be a very interesting story. It was a straight-forward tale with an extremely disgusting villain and a double-crossed protagonist who really isn't a hero, but a man seeking revenge and surviving against incredible odds.
It is a film filled with natural and human brutality. I would say it's a beautiful film but the snowy white, grey and misty blue pallet gets overwhelming when coupled with so much violence. The director really accentuated how horrific nature is and how helpless man is without his tools and technology.
