It's obviously not a grand Hollywood blockbuster show. Last episode's battle versus Varus was actually extremely underwhelming. It's a budget issue. But still, there's something I liked about season one. Surely it wasn't the best script. Actors were quite decent though (for a German production). Jeanne Goursaud is actually a raw diamond. I guess I liked season one for the mere fact that this topic was told in a decent TV drama at all. This TV show brings local (I'm actually from this region) history back to life. Not sure how accurate culture and events are depicted but it's probably a better depiction than the usual Arminius folklore (like winged helmets or the false notion that Germanic tribes are direct ancestors of modern Germans). Plus, you can listen to some quite decent Latin (decently reconstructed classical Latin - livid and believable - a relief after years of dull Latin in school).

This season premiere continues the story. Everything I said above about season one is also true for this episode: it's not great but enjoyable if you happen to be a history or Latin nerd. If they do it right, season two might even be more interesting. Cause the events after Varus" defeat are actually less well documented and are subject to much speculation.
