Watching Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krirps in this film is torture, but precisely because the characters are supposed to be torture for each other. Their relationship always seems to hang by a thread that just won't break, even though it would have been better if it had never been tightened for the good of both of them. Just the basic and very subliminal tension makes me feel uneasy and uncomfortable. At the end of the film I was glad to have finally seen it, but also not to have to watch it again.
