The one-word-review of this series is "unbalanced".

The tone is wildly inconsistent and the final episode almost feels like it's from a different series altogether. I'm sure some of that is intentional in keeping with the progression from the early "fun and games" events to the seriousness of the aftermath, but they just overdid it. The first three episodes are playing up the ridiculousness so much that it's hard to really get engaged with the story, and you end up not caring enough for the final episodes to really hit as much as they should. Plus, the humor doesn't land as much as surely intended, so it really seems like a wasted opportunity to not have spent some time in the first episodes to ground it all more in the serious reality the series ultimately wants to end up in.

That said, the cast is really good and the inclusion of the two main characters' families was handled pretty well. With better groundwork in those first few episodes, this could have been really good, but as it is, it overall ends up just being fine.
