Workmanlike direction, by the numbers biopic with clunky expositional biopic lines, anchored by a strong performance from the lead, still flattens a complex and meaningful figure into mere iconography. Spike Lee’s Malcolm X these are not. Lance Reddick made the most out of every role and I miss him dearly, and if nothing else this film reminded me to continue my watch through of his filmography, so there’s that.
