Dr. No 1962

Watching old James Bond movies is always a delight and seeing the first one after along time was no exception. Even though there's a lot of things wrong, it's still a really great movie!

I will not lie about the fact that I'm skewed towards rating 007 films high because I'm in love with them. I try to rate them as films and take my personal love out a bit, but I know that I can't do that 100%. However, I do think Dr. No certainly is a quality film. This is a hell of a way to start off a franchise that has lasted 50+ years now. Particularly, I love the first two acts, as it really shows Bond as an agent and how he does his stuff fairly realistically. The thing that knocks it back just a bit for me is the final act being a bit less exciting, but if I am honest with you I don't mind it too much. I've watched this one many times. It might not be my #1 pick to watch, but if it is on TV I probably won't change the channel.

A fine movie, made on a shoe-string budget that accomplishes what it was meant to do- ably and properly introduce James Bond to an international audience.

I can’t say how many tones I may have watched this movie.

This time, it’s presented from Blu-ray and seems to take in a visual appearance better than ever

I still think Dr No should have played a bigger part and should have had time to terrorise a little more

This the first Bond movie is surprisingly gadget free and expectedly entertaining. Sean Connery is the embodiment of the Bond character. Ursula Andress is an island goddess as Honey Ryder and Joseph Wiseman as Dr. No is memorable even though he's barely in the film. The lair of Dr. No is beautifully designed by the great Ken Adam. I recently rewatched this movie on the newly released BluRay disc version and it looked spectacular. It looked like the movie was a recently filmed 1960's period piece.

A good start to the franchise. Sean Connery is an excellent James Bond. He is confident and very charismatic. The action isn't the best but it is serviceable. Dr. No is a decent villain just wish we got some more time with him. His underground lair was super cool. All of the sets were unique and interesting.

James Bond Complete - Movie #1

This is such a charming and simple story. Connery is so cool. It's the first Bond film and this was the second time I've seen it. This time I noticed how much I liked Jack Lord's part as Felix Leiter. 007 sets a few traps because he is constantly being watched and double-crossed. He isn't like a superhero in this film. He makes some mistakes and gets lucky quite a bit.

Ursula Andress's Honey Ryder should have been recruited as a potential spy herself. I didn't realize that Joseph Wiseman's portrayal of Dr. No and the Ken Adam's awesome reactor set was such an influence for the silly Austin Powers movies.

The opening title sequence was a groovy creation by Maurice Binder. It's pretty simple but effectively colorful in an early '60s way.

This isn't the most action packed Bond film by any stretch but it lays the ground work for what's to come.

Strong introduction to Bond. Less so to the baddies he would face later on.

We have all the hallmarks - one liners, SPECTRE, the 007 theme, womanising, car chases, fights.

It is a little dated pace wise but that can be fixed with modern technology to play it quicker and relive the tediousness.

This one doesn't have a huge amount of misogyny, sexiam and racism. A bit but not a lot. And the wig work is good here.

7.25/10

My parents named me after the James Bond in this film (Sean Connery), but believe it or not I've never watched any of the Connery James Bonds. In fact, I'd only watched one Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace) but wasn't a fan. Dr No was so much better than that one IMO.

Lots of action as you would expect from any spy franchise, but with the wit and charm of Sean Connery's Bond (I loved his quick-witted response to the question about where the people who were chasing him were going: 'To their own funeral') and a surprisingly strong female character in Honey Ryder (given when this was made I thought the Bond girl would be quite weak, but she actually seemed quite strong-willed to me, despite the male characters treating her as a vulnerable lady).

And that iconic theme with those iconic titles are brilliant.

Watched this in it's newish 4k rescan thank to apple. I found this to a enjoyable watch and a good introduction to bond. It shows you where it all starts and you can tell there is still more that could be built on later on in the series. While the villain in this series could of had a much bigger role in future plots he served a great purpose in this pilot for the long running series.

This shows how well a 4k rescan of old film can do them a lot of justice. This film looked amazing in the modern format.

The villain is underdeveloped and his demise quite underwhelming but Sean Connery's charisma and impeccable style, let alone the all time classic 007 theme, save the day. RIP.

RIP Sean Connery. This is the first of my binging of many Sean Connery movies in his honor

A good film, but it is definitely hurt by its low budget at times as the voices do tend to have a weird echo in certain scenes and the horrible filter for night time scenes make it almost impossible to see the characters on screen. But I will say that Ursula Andress' introductory scene still stands the test of time.

My rating is based on modern times. I have no nostalgia about this so it's just a slow empty boring movie to me.

I can see a higher rating if you grew up with it.

A good film, presenting a simple story by today's standards, with a villain who leaves something to be desired, appearing only twice and dying the second time. The ending is a bit crazy, and while there is some unnecessary romance, at least it's not the main focus.

World domination, the same old story. Our theaters are full of films that think they're 007... or Bond. It took me a ludicrous amount of time to finally watch a James Bond film. I couldn't bring myself to watch the Craig movies until I'd at least watched the Connery ones and yet I procrastinated. Now that we're over that hump, I gotta say that it lives up to the hype. There is always a concern going back and watching older movies and seeing the lack of kindness the years have given. There are moments of that in here as well such as the titular villain's ethnicity not matching the actor's and the result of Bond's sexual appetite bordering on controversial or even criminal at times. What I will say is none that seems to stick out all that much, you may be aware of it but the movie doesn't hang around long enough to be a point of contention. I reckon it's not the best Bond movie, in fact I know it's not, it is a great start to a long and storied franchise.

If I'm brutally honest this first Bond movie is really nothing to write home about. Aside the fact it's the first one and establishes some rules and groundwork moving forward.

The story is actually rather dull, the movie takes ages to get to the point. There's no thrill or exitement. Dr. No is a bland character who only gets a miniscule backstory. The production is underwhelming even though the build some great sets. The plot holes I can see past as that never was a strong suite of any Bond movie.

On the pro side there is a certain level of realism attached to this as Bond doesn't have a lot of gadgets and the chracater feels more believeable in how he works.

I'm sorry - I like the Bond Franchise as a whole but if this wasn't a Bond movie I think people wouldn't be too kind with this. For me a Bond movie has to be entertaining first and foremost and this one isn't much.

loading replies

This was certainly fun, but also a bit bland in the middle; the villains' plans have little to no complexity, making even a 1:50 minute runtime feel like two and a half hours, if not more. Still, I liked many of the action scenes, and the cinematography was outstanding at times. Having not seem many films from the 60s, Dr. No feels very much how I would imagine a typical "dumb summer blockbuster" to be.

Starting the process of watching all the James Bonds from the original. It is easy to see why this starting one of the biggest and longest running franchises of all time, but it is even easier to realize this movie is not 60 years old! It feels from a different planet. It is also not totally James Bond as we know and love him today (from my research he finally hits his stride in the third). Nevertheless, this is worth watching, even if just historical sake. Already being 60, it will be harder and harder for younger audiences to get into this one.

Rating: 3/5 - 7.5/10 - Worth Watching

Although it's considerably dated - and Bond didn't even have his "bag of tricks" in this premiere episode - the first of the James Bond franchise was still very watchable. There were times that it was (in all honesty) quite amusing because of the enormous holes in the plot, but all in all, I still found it enjoyable. A very young Sean Connery, along with a very young Jack Lord (of the original Hawaii Five-O television series) made for an interesting screenplay. Be advised, however, that Ursula Andress does not appear until pretty late in the film…at least halfway in (and I think further than even halfway) but she's there. Again, by today's standards, the storyline is very outdated and at times the action is amusing, but I would still recommend it. Since Amazon Prime is currently running the full line of James Bond movies, I would definitely give this one a watch for anyone wanting to enjoy the franchise from its inception.

Start of the James Bond saga and from here comes Halle Berry's tribute in die another day. The character begins to take shape, Q and his inventions are not yet

After seeing what the 007 franchise would eventually become, it feels so weird for a Bond flick to be so down to earth. Despite some terribly aged blue-screen effects, some odd jump-cuts, and that unintentionally hilarious tarantula scene, the film delivers in some thrilling action and suspense.

The first James Bond movie.

A good beginning and introduction for James Bond. Needs to be compared with some other earlier films of the franchise.

Groundbreaking for the time, but nonsensical plot.

Bond....James Bond. Ian Fleming's ultimate spy gets his big screen debut in Dr. No. The story follows MI6 secret agent James Bond, who is sent to Jamaica to look into the disappearance of an operative who was investigating the activities of the mysterious Dr. No. Sean Connery crafts an iconic character in James Bond, whose charisma carries the film. But, the plot is rather thin and the writing is poor. Unfortunately, Dr. No hasn't aged very well and comes off as a little hokey and underwhelming.

loading replies

Dr. No is one of my favourite Bond movies. Mostly because it reminds me of the Bond Flemming wrote about in his books, but also because it has a few very iconic scenes. Connery saying the "Bond, James Bond" line for the first time. Ursula Andress climbing up from the water in that bikini. and more.

Yes...The franchise will improve over time, especially throughout the Connery era, but this is still one of the first movies I think about when I hear someone mention James Bond.

The drawback with this one is that now I'll be humming on that damn mango tree song for a while...
