The Wish has always been a favourite Buffy episode of mine. Top 5 easily. That final sequence, especially with Giles' words to Anyanka. So powerful.

This is a rare episode. It's uncommon for something to be pretty terrible like this is, for thirty minutes,(it's basically a bad smut fanfic that somehow got filmed-- oh, look it's a producer!) but that turns out okay in the end due to a dramatic ending with good use of slow motion/editing/score overdubbing. It's kind of cheap, but effective. Alternate reality episodes can be interesting, but they are all too often full of cardboard cutout eeeevil characters that lack whatever depth of character and nuance has been developed by the general writing of the show up until that point, and this is no exception.

The moral of the story? Never let a producer near a script. You'll end up in a bad timeline where TV is mean spirited, edgy porn and JJ Abrams ruins Star Trek and goes on to create a cottage industry of corporate cash grabs, ruining every franchise that megacorp can get its hands on. Oh wait.

Holy fuck, before I started watching the show,.I thought it was just a cheesy, high school drama like all which came after, but this series in general, and this episode, showed me that there can be lots of depth behind the God awful 90s CGIs.

I rate it "no good wish goes unpunished" out of ten.
