Season 1

Great Acting, hope there will be season 2..Way too many questions unanswered and I found the ending less than satisfactory

Season Started strong with some cool freaky parts, but ended more confusing than scary.

From executive producer J.J. Abrams comes the Stephen King inspired horror series Castle Rock. Season 1 follows a defense attorney named Henry Deaver who returns to his home town of Castle Rock, Maine, when he receives an anonymous tip that a young man has been found in a closed off section of Shawshank prison and that it’s being covered up; however, before long Henry starts to have doubts about helping free the young man. While set in Stephen King’s fictional town from several of his books, nothing in the main plot is directly taken from them. In fact, the writers have some trouble finding a plot and settling on the main characters. A lot of the episodes are just set up and vignettes that don’t really go anywhere. Still, the cast delivers some strong performances, and the production values are especially well-done; creating a creepy and atmospheric tone. Season 1 of Castle Rock is ambitious, but ends up being a muddled mess (like a lot of Stephen King works).

It's enjoyable from start to finish but clearly not as good as the great cast would make you think. At least for the first six episodes. then there's the AMAZING episode seven, which is one of the best episodes of TV in recent years. The rest of the season does not deserve it, even though the final stretch is quite good (and I'm one of the few people who liked the amibuity of the ending). But episode seven is from a different dimension. That's why I'm giving the season an 8 instead of a 7.

This is an interesting but confusing extension of the history of Castle Rock, Stephen King's most notorious locale. This is a moody, atmospheric tale that offers lots of creepy moments and minimal jump scares. The ending is a bit anti-climactic, and it honestly felt like a wrap-up that Stephen King would have written. Here's hoping that Season 2 is an entirely unrelated tale and not the continuation of the ground covered in Season 1.

Anthology series are making a much needed comeback. The single episode, short story format covered by such legendary series and the Twilight Zone, the Outer Limits, Tales From the Crypt, etc. will never be as popular or numerous as they once were. For those of us that love anthologies, that's a bummer. But these single season anthologies like Castle Rock, True Detective, and potentially, The Terror, offer entry into great stories only a dozen or so episodes deep, without the need to watch season after season of returning characters and continuations of convoluted story arcs once the show gets popular.

The show develops so slow. Should be a movie instead.
