Yes, this is a naff and hokey show (and I love that), but honestly, the decision to pretty much shunt your main protagonist to the side in favour of a new character fulfilling the same role is such a bold and nifty move from a narrative standpoint that I can't help but feel impressed. In a way that doesn't need any hedging at all. It's just another bit of evidence that, for all the (rightful) stick CBS gets for the parts of its programming that exemplify the most tired common denominator kind of pap, you can't deny that they've also developed some of the best and most solid network shows of the last decade. Now, I'm not saying God Friended Me is up there with The Good Wife, but it certainly benefits from the same kind of subtly surprising creative confidence that helped bring about best-in-class procedurals like Elementary, Limitless and Person of Interest.
