Berlin 1956. The young Monika Schöllack fights against her strict mother Caterina and the conventions of the time. She gets the strength for this from her great passion: rock 'n' roll. Caterina Schöllack would like to marry Monika and her sisters Eva and Helga as best as possible. But Monika is a hopeless case for Caterina until she has the idea of inviting her behavior student Joachim Franck to accompany Monika to Helga's wedding.
Monika continues to immerse herself in the world of rock 'n' roll, while her mother Caterina still wants her to marry Joachim Franck and promises Monika a date. Although Monika discovers another side of Joachim, she makes it clear to him that she no longer wants to see him. Meanwhile, Helga realizes that her marriage to Wolfgang is causing serious problems, and Eva becomes closer to a patient's husband.
While Eva and Helga have to choose between their feelings and social standing, Monika continues to emancipate herself from her mother with the help of rock 'n' roll. Against Caterina's will, she even enforces a rock 'n' roll course in the dance school, which is very successful. Then Monica gets pregnant. Caterina suggests a way out in which Joachim Franck should play a role. But Monica hesitates.
