This show starts out in a very lightweight way and spends much of the season jumping from one story to another and one style to another but as it progresses it actually starts to come together - for those who actually make it through. The premise is silly and the actual function of the drug at the centre of the story, NZT, is poorly defined and broadly painted. If this show took itself too seriously it would be unbearable but for the most part it uses humour and charm to draw you in and encourage you to like the characters. If they had defined the affects of NZT in a more believable way and had a more clear vision of what the show was intended to be, I think it could have seen more success.
I think the end of the series was better than many are saying but it then continued on too long with some silly sequence with a mix of the best and worse characters from the series. I was surprised by how terrible one guy was and looked him up expecting he was a non actor cameo and it turned out he is Howard Sterns limo driver.
Special mention goes to Brian's dad (Ron Rifkin) who was compelling everytime he was on screen, even if his character stagnated near the end. I also enjoyed Piper Baird Georgina Haig) who was charming and beautiful as well as being a compatriot of mine.
