From TNT comes the off-beat cop drama Memphis Beat. Season 1 follows Detective Dwight Hendricks as he adjusts to a new, by the book Lieutenant and his mother’s new shady boyfriend. Starring Jason Lee, Alfre Woodard, and DJ Qualls, the show has a pretty solid cast; Lee in particular does a good job at capturing the flavor and tone of the series. And some interesting guest stars make appearances, including Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi. Additionally, the show goes to some effort to homage Memphis’ ties to soul and blues music; naming episode titles after songs and ending with a song performed by Hendricks (though it’s clearly lip synced). While only 10-episodes, Season 1 of Memphis Beat delivers a fresh take on the cop genre that has its own unique charm.
