I'm going to reserve judgement on this series until I have seen more. There were elements I loathed and other elements that worked much better. The starting scene was absolutely terrible and could give many viewers a negative and misdirected impression of what they are about to watch. When the actual show gets underway it was more of a relationship based light comedy with some intrigue and a little action thrown in, rather than an action driven episode. Based on that first scene and elements of the action later in the episode, I am hoping that the series stays focused on the chemistry between "Jane" and "John". The coupling of a black guy and asian woman as a covert, married spy couple seems highly unlikely but if the future action scenes don't parallel that unlikelihood (as the first scene did) then it's a small issue that can be overlooked... but that opening scene was rubbish! How could those dumb arses be experienced spies?
Anyways, I liked Donald Glover and Maya Erskine's banter, they both played their roles with plenty of nuance and if you're not too expectant that it's going to be full on action the whole way, you might enjoy it. I now see what the trailer for the series was saying about the show and appreciate it's honesty even though I thought it was dumb at the time (I don't think the trailer scene worked out of context).
no background music for most of the episode and only realistic sounds are used, while it may be correct way to do it. It just removes the FUN out of action and comedy genre of the show and made it into boring documentary.
I'm interested. It looks intriguing enough to continue. Not super entertaining yet but I like the chemistry so far.
S01E01 - So far not loving it. It's so vague, haphazard, and unrealistic. Perhaps I am making too many assumptions and reading into it too much. I will have to see if it gets better. They do have some chemistry that works but rather would have stuck with Alex and Eiza as the show runners.
That opening scene was laughably horrible. Then it’s just a snooze fest for the next 40. Also who puts an ear piece in another persons ear? I guess the ending was interesting enough for me to watch the next episode.
I absolutely hate shows that do a “this season on….” Focus on making your pilot good enough to draw an audience in. It also ruins the surprise of a lot of elements in the show. I always skip it.
A lot of naysayers on this, butI'm here for it. Quite slow, thoughtful, laying the groundwork for what looks like an interesting story.
I'm absolutely here for Hiro Murai's distinct style, but it doesn't appear to be laid on too thick - a bit of moody atmosphere but this is quite a slick, and fun time.
Looking forward to seeing the rest.
So far, I've been interested enough to keep watching.
Shoe gaze mumble core secret agents
I, for one, like that they are not recreating the movie.
I get why people might dislike it, though. It's not sexy, funny or fast paced like the movie.
Soo good honestly great intro
Pretty solid!
It starts in an unexpected way (I think the idea was to subvert expectations right off the bat from the 2005 movie, or play a sort of inside joke with the viewers: "were you expecting two extremely attractive assassins? Here you are, but actually no" ), and keeps up the pace with a nice combo of comedy in the pair interactions, action and suspense over the mission, the development of their "business relationship" and generally where the story is going.
Not so sure about the chemistry between them: they each are on point, but as of now seem a little bit on parallel lines. Might as well be just the cold, starting phase. We'll see.
ps how many guest stars will there be, based on that middle-credits scene?
Confused with the pilot. Very strange way to introduce the show, no music, really boring, no actual story, it felt like a reality show . Also they changed the actual story from the movie. It was really obvious the attempt to actors more next door and not macho man with beautiful woman.
I will have to see more cause either is a hit or a Netflix show which such a strange style.
WOW now that is how you do a pilot, some character patter and then off like a bullet — or :birthday:
Intro scene was terrible though.
One episode in.. bored out of my mind, but I have a 3 episode rule so will update soon.
It was okay. When are we going to find out who the couple was at the beginning who were killed? The lady was hot.
I loved the other john/jane bit, it was the show being self aware. Now I demand an Eiza prequel!
I don’t know if I’m making sense but this has Severance vibes and I would have preferred for this to be more vivid, fast paced, colorful, like you can tell they are depressed
And I find it unrealistic that a bomb cake survived the fall when Jane ran into that lady
A mysterious company puts mercenaries together under cover as upscale "married" couples, in return for "high-risk" on-call services: surveillance, kidnappings, assassinations, near home and far away. Whose side are they on? They don't care! They're mercenaries. They're thrill-seekers. Besides, other career options didn't work ... More importantly: How "under cover" is this marriage supposed to get? How will "John" and "Jane" handle their stressful, secretive 24/7 partnership? Like a fairly recognizable bickering couple, it turns out ...
I should be finishing, "Atlanta..." but, I'm here. It's funny -- not because of punchlines but more subtle stuff, and, knowing Donald Glover wrote or co-wrote seems to fit the humor and weight I remember from the first few eps of, "Atlanta." Cool... cool, cool, cool.
"Hihi," sounds Japanese, but, just as the Brangelina, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," didn't know who they were working for, I believe we're all informed enough ("Apology of An Economic Hitman") to understand three letter agencies here love to subcontract (if not for plausible deniability, then at least to dodge healthcare and other benefits). In other words, we all know who they're working for, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Weird.
They don't know - or seemingly really care - who they're working for. In fact, they're ready to do some treason if it comes to that. They just love the risk I guess. They're spies but even they don't know what side they're on... kinda seems like that'd be important.
Oh, and whoever they're working for clearly doesn't care if they die or get burnt. Because, let's be honest, the show could basically end here. They were seen delivering a package and then running from the scene of an explosion. By dozens of witnesses and probably a good number of cameras. All because the mysterious company didn't even bother fully informing them?
There's potential here but I guess I have to suspend my disbelief and watch this more like a comedy. Which, well, it's not that funny.
