Significant Others is a funny take on serious relationships. It is a unique, improvised show about four couples going through couples therapy. It chronicles their lives in and out of the marriage counseling offices, and features a cast of highly talented improvisational actors and comedians who, quite literally, script themselves. The ensemble includes Brian Palermo (writer for The Weekenders) in the role of straight-laced financial analyst James, Andrea Savage (Good Morning, Miami, The West Wing) as his free-spirited wife Chelsea, Herschel Bleefeld (Bruce Almighty) in the role of anxious father-to-be Ethan, Faith Salie (Sex and the City) as mother-to-be Eleanor, Fred Goss (South Park, The Man Show) as good-hearted, but not happy Bill, and Jane Edith Wilson (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as his wife Connie. Other regular cast members include Nicole Randall Johnson (Miss Match, CSI) as Alex, and Chris Spencer(Vibe, movies The Sixth Man and Sin) as Devon. Meet The Couples:

In therapy, Chelsea makes a stunning revelation in saying that she's had ten prior ""soul mates"" out of roughly 200 past sex partners. James is completely floored by the number of notches on his new bride's bedpost, but still promises to make an effort in being supportive and decides accompany her to an art gallery celebration. At the gallery, his insecurities drive him to quiz everyone on their past sexual exploits until he and Chelsea get into a shouting match that gets them kicked out of the party. Oddly, this turns out to be a bonding experience, at least until Chelsea adds to the drama by revealing that she was married to someone before James as well. Meanwhile, we learn more of story of Connie and Bill. When Bill lost his job, he also lost Connie's respect and adoration. Ever since then, they've been bickering and romance or any kind of intimacy has been out of the question. When her sister Ginny volunteers to help Bill to get his act togther, Connie is both anxious and grateful f

Bill begins to feel guilty in having an affair with Connie's sister, Ginny, but on the flip side, it has certainly improved his self esteem. Over coffee, he confides in his two friends, Doug and Dave. They advise him, against the guilt he is feeling, to keep sleeping with Ginny in order to give his pals time to ""help him figure it out"", which he does. On the other hand, Connie herself is having flirtatious encounters of her own with her coworker, Rick. But just how far will the two of them go? Meanwhile, Jack, Eleanor's dad, is paying the couple an extended visit, and he immediately begins cramping Ethan's style; especially when he walks in while they're having sex in an effort to start a discussion on (of all things) international terrorism. Ethan's frustration grows even further when a somewhat intoxicated Jack pees on Ethan's shoes in a restaurant bathroom. All is forgotten, even if not forgiven, when Ethan learns that Jack left Eleanor a $2000 check. Next, we learn that Chelsea is

In this episode, we learn that Eleanor's pregnancy has dramatically increased her sex drive, but the idea of a threesome with a pregnant Eleanor is killing Ethan's. He seeks advice from his older brother Seth, who offers a strange, but somehow successful, pep talk. Thanks to Ethan's renewed efforts, Eleanor is getting some relief, but is appaled to learn that Ethan's family now knows the intimate details of their sex life. Chelsea, on the other hand, questions James' sometimes confrontational and always controlling behavior. While attending a party at his office, she strikes up conversations with his boss and several of his other coworkers, letting slip certain private (and rather embarrassing) details about James. In therapy, however, Chelsea apologizes for giving away too much at the party, while James admits there are secrets that he'd prefer to keep from his colleagues, and his wife. Meanwhile, Ginny pressures Bill to reveal his affair to Connie and end their marriage. She also goe

1x04 A Breck, A Brother & A Funeral

  • 2004-03-24T02:00:00Z30m

While jogging with Ginny, Connie confesses her ""affair"" with her co-worker Rick, convinced that her mother's deathbed ""cheaters"" accusation was directed at her. At Rose's funeral, Bill receives a phone call with an exciting job offer, which only serves to annoy his wife and the other mourners. Ginny reveals Connie's infatuation with Rick as well as her affair with Bill, scandalizing everyone. Meanwhile, James grows dishearted when Chelsea's snowboarding ex-husband Breck pays them an extended (and unexpected) visit. Naturally, his spaced out attitude and exhibitionism make an awkward situation even harder to cope with. When their post-dinner conversation turns to Breck's new girlfriend, Blue, it's Chelsea's turn to act defensive and uncomfortable. After hitting the breaking point and stomping off, the two men are left ironically bonding over what both consider to be her controlling nature. Finally, Eleanor announces her suspicion that Ethan's brother Seth is secretly gay. Joining Seth a

On this episode, Alex and Devon notice their son Rodney playing ""argument"" with his action figures. Worrying that they spend too much time causing a scene in front of him, they decide to seek therapy. Later, attending Parents Nigt at Rodney's school, they encounter a number of eccentric, over-bearing parents and teachers. Devon, uncomfortable with the rathy touchy-feely atmosphere, makes a comment that offends gay parent Ian who, by all accounts, makes him wish he never made the comment in the first place. On the flip side, Ethan and Eleanor expecting a baby has consumed their lives so much that they fear they've become a boring, uninteresting, and lifeless couple. Arriving at a party, they agree not to mention Eleanor's ""condition"". Realizing the two have little else to talk about, Ethan discloses that they're expecting. Now, the couple becomes the center of attention. In therapy, James announces to Chelsea that they're going to New York in the upcoming weekend which, unfortunately,

On the season finale of Significant Others, James, alone in New York, makes repeated attempts to call Chelsea in the hopes of making up. Chelsea, refusing to pick up the phone, sets her sights on cutting loose at her friend's wedding. By speaker phone, James has a breakthrough in therapy. When he unexpectedly shows up at the wedding, Chelsea is touched and charmed that he would break all of his plans and come home just for her. The excitement quickly fades the next morning, however, when she learns his meeting was cancelled anyway. Alex and Devon, meanwhile, fear that Rodney may be growing too attached to Carlotta, their Mexican maid. Determined to spend more time with their son, they plan a family vacation. The family piles into the car for a road trip to a lakeside campsite. Along the way, they argue, they make up, they joke together, and, ultimately, they admit that they miss Carlotta. Finally, Ethan and Eleanor go house hunting, but finding a home they both like proves rather chall

After Eleanor's miscarriage, Ethan has resumed his role as the household's biggest baby. When he finds their shower broken one morning, Ethan does the only sensible thing: he asks his wife to ask the neighbors if it's okay if he uses theirs. Next door, Eleanor hits it off with Justin, her surprisingly intellectual teenage neighbor. Ethan looks for her, but instead finds an old lady with dry skin and strong opinions about marriage. Ultimately, Ethan finds his wife in the neighbor's backyard, smoking with her new teen friend, at least until they are busted by Justin's mother. After their funeral crash and burn, Bill has left his wife Connie and moved in with her sister Ginny. She's eager to meet his friends and cement their relationship, but it's obvious Bill doesn't share the same itinerary. The new couple has dinner out with Bill's best friends Doug and Dave and their wives. The night starts out on a negative note and gets worse, as the group raise their glasses in the names of increas

2x02 Crying, Lying & Still Trying

  • 2004-12-06T02:00:00Z30m

In therapy, Alex gets Devon to acknowledge that he dislikes his job, encouraging him to use the magnetism he believes he has to find a more suitable one. With the help of his entrepreneurial brother-in-law Larry, he develops the notion for a new brand of clothing: ""Re-Nig"" Discouraged by Alex's rather vocal opposition, the men head out for coffee. There, they discuss their ideas with a few of Larry's female friends. When one of the more bold women demonstrates her support by daringly placing her tongue in Devon's ear, Larry gets offended and disbands the partnership. Without a doubt, ""Re-Nig"" becomes a success. Meanwhile, Chelsea wants to take things slow with James, feeling that rushing intimacy has been the cause of disaster in past relationship. On the other hand, James resorts to more of a ""use it or lose it"" philosophy. At a local video store, Chelsea admits that her plan is to rent a video as background for a make-out session. However, James coerces her into renting a porno flick

James is surprised to hear that Chelsea is pulling in $30,000 a month, then angry to learn that she's letting another man invest it. Anger soon turns to dismay when he meets the man, Steve, a disreputable-looking guy at Chelsea's new country club. There, they spend a mostly enjoyable day with Steve and his wife Suzy. However, when James spots him throwing up in the men's room, he assumes it's bulimia; in fact, it's actually a side effect of chemotherapy. Now Steve is dead and James is managing Chelsea's finances; but still isn't seeing any returns in the bedroom. Alex is a little put off to learn that Devon has been taking erection-enhancing pills to supplement their sex life. But with sixty-two left, she admits it wouldn't be ""economical"" to waste the pills. When son Rodney tries one, it's time for a family trip to the emergency room and a roundabout conversation with the admitting nurse. A dour woman from Social Services asks a lot of questions, but Alex gets the family out of a tigh

Connie and Bill are still in therapy: separately. Both of them claim to be content apart, but Bill is hoping to talk Connie out of the divorce, especially now that Ginny has kicked him out of her apartment. On their way to a final, pre-paper signing cup of coffee, Connie unexpectedly crashes into a pair of parked cars. While awaiting medical attention, she and Bill have a frank exchange in which both admit they're still in love with one another. Now, they're reunited, in couples therapy, and Bill is assisting Connie with a few weeks of physical therapy. When Ethan is too busy to accompany her to a movie, Eleanor goes alone and comes back with a new friend, Annette. Very quickly, Annette makes herself at home, drinking milk from the carton and sneezing everywhere. Eleanor realizes her impulsiveness of designating Annette her new movie buddy was a mistake, but she can't bring herself to tell her to leave. When Annette wonders if it's because she's a lesbian, Eleanor seizes the opportunit

At home, Ethan prevents his wife from answering nature's call and, much to Eleanor's chagrin, nature's not calling back. They duke it out, and Ethan storms off to his parent's house. There, they both admit that they've been squabbling because they never properly addressed their disappointment about Eleanor's miscarriage. They attempt to have a bout of make-up sex on Ethan's childhood bed, but don't get very far when her urge to ""eliminate"" overrides her urge to ""procreate"". After another proposal (this time, with umph), Chelsea and James are once again engaged; at least until James says something absurd in therapy and blows it. On the way home, Chelsea tries to return the ring, but they lose it along with their watches and his wallet when mugged by an unarmed man on a bicycle. Tired of waiting for the cops, they drive off, only to spot the thief entering a very nice house in their neighborhood, this time armed with bags of groceries. James and Chelsea pay a visit to a man by the name of Darren, a somewhat creepy artist Chelsea hopes to be able to represent. While meeting with hem, they are greeted by his even creepier friend Trent, and discuss the inevitability of a one-world government. Darren needs to see a level of commitment before he'll let Chelsea sell his art. Trent suggests the engaged pair get married, as Darren is an ordained minister. Chelsea agrees in order to close the deal. After exchanging touchingly heartfelt vows, the newly(re)weds are horrified to learn their marriage has been consecrated under Satan and that Trent is the Antichrist. As Bill moves back in with Connie, his sister-in-law, Ginny, drops by unexpectedly with her scary brother Zack (who is back from Iraq). With a smile on his face, he shares horrible war stories; for Zack, Iraq was ""awesome."" Connie, Ginny and Bill attempt to lie about what has happened between them, but Zack sees through it.
