“The Way We Was” is another quality episode that provides the origin story of how Homer and Marge met. What this episode lacks in laughs, it mostly makes up for in sweetness, with some genuinely heartwarming scenes that elevate the flashbacks. The pacing is a little rushed, however. I feel like this is an episode that needed more than 23 minutes to flourish, but I can't deny how well-written the flashbacks scenes are, giving proper development for Homer and Marge in a way that never feels contrived or ham-fisted; this is pretty impressive for a cartoon show that was only in its second season.

Overall, an enjoyable and well-written flashback story that may have needed more time to tell.

Such a beautiful episode that really works so well, despite the lack of humour. That "How can I be wrong about the only thing I've been certain about all my life?" moment really struck a chord with me and the episode has the most beautiful of endings.

I really like this episode.

Always love when we get some backstory about established couples, and I like the way Homer and Marge met.

Also shows us how long he's known Barney, Selma, and Patty.

Whatever this episode lacks in the pure comedy of later seasons, it makes up for in sweetness. It's tough to show why Marge and Homer work. As this episode demonstrates, they have always been on much different paths. But "The Way We Was" goes a long way toward showing how Marge brings out the best in Homer, and how despite his misguided nature, Homer loves Marge as completely and unabashedly as anyone could. A very sweet and sincere episode of the show.
