Jack Klugman is really "in the zone" here. Early in the episode, he's a smooth and tough conman. But once he finds out that his son Pip is struggling to stay alive in Vietnam, Klugman successfully sells that his character Max cares about his son above all else. He deeply regrets his past mistakes and it's heart-wrenching when he prays to God to switch places with Pip so that he can live. To me, it's pretty sappy overall, but it's a nice story. I do get tired of hearing Max say "Pip" like a hundred times, though.
