A totally left-field, singular modern anime both in concept and aesthetics, set in a post-human world rife with vast expanses of solitary beauty. Features the most insane character arc of all time, but you'll have to continue the story in the manga.
Unapologetic in its politics and history, Riyoko Ikeda's take on the downfall of the Ancien Régime is a radical and boundary-pushing shōjo classic full of fire and pathos, with a top-tier genderfluid protagonist to boot.
I love the original run, but the third season is just out of this world. As haunting, beautiful, subversive, awe-inspiring, and disturbing as art can get. The final episode shattered me in a way that no work has managed before or since, not even close.
