Yes it has been done before, yes the budget is clearly a bit lower than others, yes the usual hoops are jumped through but there are also a couple of interesting morale and shocking moments. Not always well judged but also a surprise to see them addressed in a popcorn movie like this.
Easy escapist entertainment with its heart in the right place.

Ghosts

What a brilliantly sweet, funny, touching and positive comedy. You feel emotionally attached to the characters which over the course of the short episodes are swung from laughter to tears.
Not usually a fan of comedies but when they are this good will happily watch on repeat.

For All Mankind

With some anticipation I looked to Apples new programme list and this one stood out. An alternate history where the Russians made it to the moon first. The knock on effect is fascinating affecting politics, equal rights and family dynamics.
From the team that brought Battlestar to the screen it has been made with a realism that makes it accessible and possible.
Well cast and characters fleshed out to a point that you care about all of them. Really please to see where this goes in the future and hope Apple keeps supporting projects like this.

The Adam Project

So I really enjoyed this. Mix of action and filled with enough emotional beats to bring it all together. The young Adam was excellent..
Some of the characters a bit underused but the story kept on rolling on all the same. Good Sunday afternoon viewing.

Downton Abbey

Having watched and enjoyed the series I was looking forward to this big screen outing. So disappointing.
The writing was appalling. Clearly a new team of writers and Julian Fellows had stepped away. Too many characters which was fine for a long running show but storylines squashed into a movie run time meant that nobody was fully served.
I don't mind the predictability but it was shoe horned in with the subtlety of a preschool drama.
Don't sully the series and avoid this where possible. It does nothing to further develop any of these characters.

This was a whole lot of fun. It is a surreal action comedy and not to be taken too seriously. The leads drive it forward with charisma and energy. BDH is a breath of fresh air in the lead role and Sam Rockwell always lifts any role.
Set pieces were energetic and twists were fun. Just go with it and don't think to hard and you will have a lot of fun.

The Butler

A little obvious an in your face. An opportunity missed. Could have been a fantastic film with a slightly more subtle director.

Locked Down

Oceans 11 in COVID this is not. Enjoyable cast with good chemistry which would have been enough. The theft storyline was possibly a bit much and a bit predictable. Clearly thrown together quickly and some of the comedy is a little obvious and predictable but the leads at least make it watchable.

Elementary

7 Seasons but still re-invented itself. Initially a concept base don the Sherlock Homes novels but instead became about his relationships and challenges in he is personal life. Watson became an ever increasing part of his life, initially conflict then as a partner. Gender was never an issue and stereotypes were overlooked. As clever as procedural as you will likely see with excellent supporting cast.

I for one will miss it, never must see watching but a great filler. Where we now are surrounded by must see event programmes, sometimes this easygoing, well written and fabulously acted week by week viewing was great escapism. A fitting end to a fine series.

Moonfall

So bad it is almost good. Interstellar this is not. Throw away all your common sense and reasoning and just go for the ride. Good fun and effects not bad. Despite the whole planet being at risk there was never really any feeling of jeopardy or scale. Harmless fun and a very typical Emmerich style and avoidance of any real science.

American Underdog

What a truly lovely film. I am a sucker for sports melodramas and this is probably the best I have seen in a long time.
This ticked all the boxes and was a pleasure to spend the time in their presence.
No real surprises but for those unaware of the story, and I’m not a big football fan, it kept you not just focused on Warners progress but on the family and the impact of striving to be a top sportsman. By no means a perfect film, made for TV really but worth a watch.
A lovely matinee film for a Sunday afternoon. Enjoy

The Vault

Not ground breaking in anyway and no significant surprises. Good fun problem solving and variable characters. Enjoyable entertainment as a Sunday afternoon watch but unlikely to warrant a repeat viewing.

The Protégé

Some good action scenes which had a little more to them than just the action itself. Great central female character let down by some very unthreatening baddies and under written make parts. Enjoyable and keen to see her character again… forgettable but worth a watch.

Wrath of Man

Assault on Precinct 13 this is not. Over thought with an interesting intro and finale but drags in the middle. Unnecessary flashbacks, trying to make a very simple story seem more complex than needed to be. Taken itself far too seriously with minimal emotional impact at anytime and the ending was never really in doubt.
Watchable but easily forgettable.

Reminiscence

This was an old school film noir which we do not see done this well anymore. Given the mix of Sci-Fi and future leanings it remained gritty and classical in nature. The leads were excellent but ultimately the plot was a little unsurprising and you never really believed the relationship between any of them, Neither Thandiwe and Hugh or Hugh and Rebecca had any time to really develop and too little work was done to expand on theta relationships.
I think the story was the focus and snot the character development. Saying that it did keep me watching and clearly Lisa Joy is a talented director , just needs a little more input on the script development.

The Suicide Squad

Well this was a big step up from the original. More adult, more funny and yet had surprising emotional pulls. Unlike other DC films, this is bright and hits its mark more times than it misses.
Some of the lines are a bit cheesy and the plot is ridiculous but I don't mind that. I had fun from start to finish and hoe other DC films take note.
PS - please delete all record of the first film which is a car crash of a film but did at least bring us Harley Quinn...

A Quiet Place

Horrors are not normally my thing but finally got round to watching this on many others recommendation.
Brilliant. Charismatic and incredibly tense.
What a wonderfully conceived story and so well executed by first time director and star. I could watch Blunt do anything and in this was one of her best. A must watch…

Judas and the Black Messiah

Fabulous performances. There is a larger story here somewhere which would have been great to examine but overall a tense character driven piece with excellent central performances and a moving finale. Sad to see how little has changed in 50 years...

Breach

Well. Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane dialling it in and comparing pay checks... 28 days later meets alien this is not.
Flat acting. Terrible effects. Predictable right to the end credits. Terrible editing. Not sure why I have it 3 stars. Guess it had a couple of watchable moments.

Who knew Momoa could act...
Great world building and felt bot expansive and claustrophobic at the sometime. Innovative in exploring a world where the blind lead the blind and sight is an aboration. Well scripted and mix of adventure, family drama and action in and post apocalyptic world.

I for one am looking forward to where they expand to in season 2. Id like to see more threat and expand on the family dynamics and insecurities but a promising start. Great to see a studio taking a stab at something fresh and new rather than reworking old stories and concepts.

Lost in Space

Okay, I have just finished this having binged watched over about 2 weeks. It surprises me to read the negative reviews.

I for one thought it was great. Well defined characters and dynamics between them. The effects were top notch, far better than most TV sci-fi shows. Some of the plot lines were a little obvious but still were done well. Tension built well and it addressed more complex issues than most shows of this nature would go too.

Role on the Second Season and hopefully they can expand the scope but keep the focus on the family dynamic. Well done.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Big fan of the first. Sadly this is no match. Too many characters and gross out humour which felt out of place and cheap. Good fight scenes, awful cameos and special effects. Wasted talent.

Always a fan of good US political drama. Saddly this is just not clever enough. Predictable and clichéd. Trying to throw in action to keep the story growing and the background conspiracy is just that, in the background. Poor character development as few, including Sutherland, seem to get much in the way of plot or screentime. I will give it a little longer but never going to compare with the West Wing or Veep. Consider Madam Secretary instead...

So have finally got round to completing the show. Great premise, storyline was all over the place and tried to make itself clever whilst dumbing itself down at the same time. A real wasted opportunity which needed a better approach behind the scenes. US politics is primed for a decent show at the moment and this is not it...

Madame Web

After the awful reviews for this I had low expectations. The first 2/3 were okay, actually quite enjoyable in places. The young girls were good fun if a little annoying. The lead was a little light in charisma and the baddy minimal threat or explanation for their actions.
The last 1/3 though made no sense, it was all over the place and gave up trying to get to explain anything.
A very forgettable film.

I admire what marvel tried to do with this character and the respect to both her disability and Native American heritage. As a drama it worked well. The performances were good.
Unfortunately the action pieces were rushed and unclear. Motivation for the characters were unclear and some decisions ludicrous.
A strong concept let down by a poor overall narrative.

The Creator

World building at its finest. Digital effects seamlessly integrated into a film and has never looked so real and believable.

Some of the decisions made by the characters is daft and only in place to drive the story and challenges believability. Some of the messaging a bit in your face but the Vietnam parallel was an interesting slant.

Would love to see more stories in this world and would watch anything from Director Gareth Edwards...

The Marvels

I Enjoyed both WandaVision and Ms Marvel. Both had well driven plots and interesting and fun lead characters. Bringing them together in this new team up worked fairly well. Where it was let down was in the jumbled plot and lack of any tangible threat. The predictable plot developments and lack of any tangible threat made the whole film feel inconsequential.

Good acting, some interesting visuals don't make up for the rushed plot. Where is the overarching story that we got so engrossed in in Phase 1 & 2 without even realising it. This unsubtle jumble of ideas feels like a wasted opportunity to bring Marvel to a new audience and instead angered the existing supporters.

Heart of Champions

Being and ex-rower thought this would be worth a watch. The rowing, coaching and racing was actually pretty god, let down but the soapy melodrama around it which never really felt earned. Some surprising emotional beats but overall and forgetable movie if fine in the moment. Extra star for Michael Shannon, always good value...

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre

Ridiculous nonsense. Still a bit of fun. Not worth a franchise as the characters are so superficial and lack any development. Forgettable

Ms. Marvel

Given that this appears to be aimed at a teen market it is one of the most mature Marvel properties. Fully fleshed out relationship and characters whom you can care for. Great to see different cultures represented and not a caricature playing with preconceptions.
Iman Vellani is a revelation and great casting and her whole family a delight and would happily just watch and episode around their dinner table.
Maybe it dropped the ball a little towards the end and some of the motives a little unclear but overall probably the best of the Marvel TV shows along with Wandavision so far.
