A new variation on an existing concept. But nicely done. Fits well with other similar shows, like Liar Game (JP or KR), Zero, Kaiji, and others. Can only recommend it.
I noticed one thing. Each time there is a murder game in a Korean show, they focus more on the characters. In Japanese shows, they focus more on the game mechanics. I wonder why it is so.
A nicely made sci-fi show. Some new ideas here and there and some borrowed from others. I liked the story, the characters, the performance was good, the effects and designs were good. Just don't watch it with the English dub.
I have seen every episode at least 10 times, and I will see them again. The best detective TV show ever.
Surprisingly enjoyable. The mystery is interesting, builds well upon itself, and keeps you watching to see what's going on. Overall I hated only the performance of the main character, who l think could have been replaced with a cardboard cutout without any loss. Luckily as the show progresses he becomes more of a side character and the story is not about him. Also too bad the story is not contained in the season, as it does not answer everything and the ending is quite open. Hopefully, a second season is made.
Likable characters, good animation, fun story. Really relaxing and enjoyable. Hope it continues this way
I expected a documentary, all I got was fairy tales.
The idea on its own is very interesting, and I will definitely pick up the book. But the execution here is off. The show is mostly filler. If you watch the last 5 minutes of every episode, you will see almost all the interesting stuff.
It keeps adding and removing characters and then trying to make you care about characters it just introduced 5 minutes ago. It's only 8 episodes, but for half of the people in the last episode, I had no idea who they are or why they are there.
It should have focused more on the main 4, or even better, choose 2 and focus on them. If this was made as a 2-hour movie and had 2 main characters for the whole runtime, this would be much better.
The characters are also not the best. The story tries to have some character development (two have quite a big tragedy, but forget about it completely within 5 minutes) but it falls very flat. They also should be "scientists" but they jump to conclusions so quickly without any reasoning, that they sound stupid half of the time. Maybe it is better in the book.
A fun mystery show, even though it got worse as the seasons progressed. Still, I saw every episode multiple times, and will probably watch them again. The best episodes are consistently the ones that take place in Cabot Cove, and it will always be funny how everybody is shocked when another murder happens there. With that murder rate, it has to be the murder capital of the world.
I actually always expected an episode where they would show that Jessica is a secret killer mastermind behind all these murders. even as a what-if episode. There can't be any other explanation for how a writer is associated with so many killings. But we never got one.
If you like Japanese mystery shows or shows like Columbo or Poirot, this is an easy recommendation. If you need action, chasing, shooting, and similar, just skip this one. This is mostly just people standing around and talking.
The mysteries here are clever and captivating. It will just hook you in, and you will need to see the resolution. The main character is quirky but fun, in a line with many detectives. The supporting cast is good even though some are a bit cartoony. But that's probably as this is based on a manga. Nothing too bad. I like how everything is interconnected in the end, and you can see that there is a thought behind it, it does not feel random. Everything is explained, except the little tease for the next season
In the end, I did not like only one thing. The Samsung fold product placement. The phones looked too much out of place. Did not really fit the personalities of the characters in the show.
It started strong and there are many good episodes. but especially the second part of the second season was horrible. Episode after episode of nothing happening, just them sitting in a room discussing plans. Really boring.
Easy to recommend. Really enjoyed this one, even though zombie shows are not my thing. Interesting story, where things are explained, likable characters played well by actors who are not that older, so they quite fit, no annoying characters, and they even behave rationally most of the time. The survival aspect is a bit toned down, and the show focuses more on the individual characters, but that is a plus here. Also, the camera work was really good, I especially liked the long continuous shots in a few of the episodes. And there even is an ending to the story shown, even though they left a door open for a season 2
There are only a few things I did not like, and they all were in the way the story was written. I did not like the fakeouts (showing something happening and they in the next episode you find out that nothing really happened), the perfect timings (people and events miss each other by seconds all the time), and repeating situations (for instance, almost unlocking a door, and then something happens to stop the character. But this is probably mostly due to limited locations). Also, some characters are underused, and some are really randomly killed.
It has been a while since I read the book, but the start looks promising. Bit slow, but not the worst. Let's see how it continues.
There are quite a few Japanese TV shows that are filled with Locked rooms and similar mysteries. And if you like any of those, you will like this one too. The actors are good, the characters are fun and the mysteries are interesting. What else would you need?
I can't shake the feeling that the authors saw Twin Peaks and wanted to create something similar. Overall the mystery is quite good, even the ending is not the worst. But it's so paynfully slow, filled with random things that go nowhere. it's strange just to be strange. You could probably cut out half of it without losing anything important.
Usually, I like anime more than the live-action version, but not this time. Minami plays Yumeko so perfectly, so crazy.
I just finished my 3rd or maybe even 4th time watching all the episodes. Still, I really enjoyed it. The mysteries are clever and enjoyable even if you know who did it, but the highlight here are the interactions between Kageyama and Reiko. Just perfect.
I think I have seen this already more than 5 times, and each time it is so much fun. Too bad there is not a second season. If you like shows like Red Dwarf, It crowd, or Black books, you will love this.
Overall a funny story, that is quite stupid and hampered by some bad acting. This would work better as a stage play.
It's a fun mystery Japanese show. If you like those you will like this one. But I would not choose this one as a start, as the main characters like to refer to many other shows all the time (Galileo, Doctor X, and others)
Enjoyable although quite a short mystery series. The cases in each episode are quite interesting and those that like Japanese detective shows will not be disappointed. I just had two issues with this show. First the flares. There are so many of them you would think you are watching a star trek movie. Makes it hard to watch especially in the first episode. At least it gets better as the show progresses. Secondly, the casting for the main character. I found the performance quite good, but the actor just did not fit the character, at all. The behavior and everything would fit much better with an older actor. This one is hard to take seriously a lot of times.
Season 2 update: While still entertaining, the overall tone of the series shifted, going for a lighter comedic feel. But the flares remained. The ending of the second season was also weaker and they don't close the cliffhanger from the first season at all. I hope there is a season 3
One of the shows I love going back to. I think I have seen it at least 5-6 times already. The main character is funny, likable, perfectly played. The supporting cast is great, the stories are entertaining, the time travel is used in an intelligent way. And not to forget all the inside jokes, like the effects the driver starts adding to the time travel, the criminal detective show you see snippets across various episodes and much more
It started really well and then went with full speed off the cliff. I would give the first half a 9, the second a 5. So 7 on average.
I was expecting more clever games as they progressed, but it went the other way. The whole tone shifted after the 4th episode and not for the best. And whose idea was there to incorporate flashbacks for characters that were just introduced minutes ago. Nobody cares. You have main characters, how about focusing on them. But no, they were sidelined for the whole second half.
A very faithful adaptation of what already was a great book. Too bad I read the book, and in the middle of the first episode I remembered the whole solution. Still, I really enjoyed seeing how they tried to obscure it, keeping the surprise.. If you like An then there were none by Agatha Christie, you will love this, as it is heavily inspired by that book.
Always when I watch a show like this, I do hope that real scientists are smarter. But the older I get, I no longer belive that.
Overall, the underlying story is interesting, the show just is about everything, except that. There are a few good moments, but a lot of pointless ones. The moment where one adult had to explain to another adult that 43 + 8 is 51 killed all hope for this show for me
After rewatching Twilight zone, Outer limits, Tales from the Darkside and Tales from the Crypt for at least 5th time, I was looking for something new. And I stumbled on this show. Maybe be because I wend to it after watching so many great shows, but this was just bad. The acting and effects were good. The cinematography mostly also, just often too dark. But the stories were just boring, dragged out, uninspired, forgetable. I only like the 3rd episode, that showed a bit of originality. Skip this show, go watch better ones.
A fun show, that is caried mostly by the main character. Too bad the writing gets progressively worse as the episodes go. If they stopped after the 8th episode, it would be better.
Pretty visuals, but mediocre writing. Feels really slow and bloated, with mostly nothing going on. There were moments when I thought this was written by AI. I hope the story picks up, but that will not help the horrible characters. As in most shows, the characters that should be the smartest behave like total idiots, and that repeatedly. Suspension of disbelief is not enough to take this seriously when there is no effort shown.
Rewatching this great show, I forgot how good it was. So many great actors, memorable stories, and perfect practical effects.
After 4 episodes it's quite good. There is an interesting mystery, and one is intrigued about where it's going. Still, it has some of the typical problems other streaming shows have, not wanting to move the story at a reasonable pace, so they have something for the next season. But actually, the worst thing in the whole show are the hairstyles of a lot of the background cast. They completely break the immersion, as they don't fit the setting at all. Like they had them run in from a different set, and just changed the clothes.
This was painful. At least it was quite short. Around 30% is quite interesting archive footage, with the rest some guy just making things up. Toward the end I really expected they will start blaming aliens.
