Movies featuring time-travel, time loops or related themes I have seen over the years.

Ontology is the philosophical study of being, existance, becoming and reality. In simple terms it seeks to classify and explain entities.

In movies and tv show ontology usually comes in the flavor of an ontological mystery at the center of the plot with several of the following elements: the characters do not know who they are, where they are, how they got to the place there are in, and the central conflict is to get out of there and find answers to the above questions.

In the most common version of the trope, the characters are locked into a strange room or find themselves at a strange place with no contact to the outside. They have no idea how they got there, why they are there or how to get out, nor do they know who is behind their predicament, if anyone at all.

The main idea behind such stories is the investigation of a restricted environment in which the characters find themselves with the goal of mastering the environment, revealing secrets, and ultimately escape.

This list focuses on such stories. I added a few edge cases for good measure, like pure escape room, death game or timeloop movies that have a strong ontological undertone, even though they are not ontological mysteries per se.

If you think something shouldn't be on this list, or if I missed something that should be on here please leave a comment.

A collection of films that feature killer sharks, are shark themed in general, or have sharks as part of their narrative. No documentaries, animation or shorts.

6

A selection of talassophobic movies.

Thalassophobia is the fear of deep bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, rivers or even pools. That phobia includes just being in deep bodies of water, the fear of the vast emptiness of the sea, being trapped underwater, or aquatic creatures lurking below in murky waters.

In general it is not the fear of the ocean itself even but the vastness and emptiness of it and how small we are compared to what might be in it, which can include the fear of man-made objects or just giant things unter water in related sub-phobias.

In other words, this list consists of movies with a deep-sea horror vibe or maritime movies with a strong emphasize on isolation and survival under or above water that might trigger thalassophobia.

No genertic aquatic creature features, martime movies, submarine movies or movies with a sinking ship included that otherwise are not ocean centric. Also no shorts and documentaries.

Though not all movies set in the ocean or another body of water trigger thalassophobia. For example phobics have no problem watching "Avatar 2" (mainly because of all the clean water).

Last Update: 10/2023

7

This list contains movies that are submarine centric or feature a submarine in a prominent way that I have seen over the years.

The list only includes films made after WWII. I also took the liberty of adding some addtional "deep water" films for good measure.

If you think something is missing or something should not be included drop a comment.

8

A selection of banking and capitalism movies plus some documentaries.

Last Update: 2024/01

9

A selection of movies and TV shows about journalism and journalists I have seen over the years.

10

A selection of legal dramas and thrillers I have seen over the years. I left out most of the generic lawyer/crime dramas.

Movies on this list mostly play in the court room, deal with a law suit, a trial, or have a legal principle or legal negotiations as their main plot.

The theme of alien invasion in movies revolves around the idea of extraterrestrial beings from other planets or galaxies coming to Earth with hostile intentions or a desire to conquer or manipulate humanity. This theme often explores the tension and fear that arise from the unknown, the clash of civilizations, and the vulnerability of our planet and species.

There are different variations of alien invasion scenarios. The "War of the Worlds" style portrays large-scale destruction and conflict, emphasizing the chaos and devastation caused by a direct assault. On the other hand, the "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" approach delves into psychological horror and the idea that anyone could be an imposter, leading to paranoia and mistrust. Some stories use comedy to subvert the seriousness of the invasion theme and exaggerate the tropes or use humor to highlight the absurdity of the situation.

This list comprises movies that I consider worth watching and exemplify the trope across various genres.

No animation, superhero, comic, battle mech, or post-apocalyptic movies allowed on this list.

I included a few edge cases that, technically, are not invasion movies but align closely with the overarching theme.

Last Update: 2023/23/08

12

Movies and TV Shows about viral outbreaks (released pre-Covid) that I have seen over the years and have a viral outbreak at their center and not as a background setting.

This list does not include movies where a viral outbreak is not in the focus or just the backstory for a dystopaian future e.g. Zombie/Vampire Plague, Last Man Standing Scenarios, Refugees, Found Footage etc.

If something is missing or something should not belong on this list, feel free to leave a comment.

13

Movies and shorts based on the works of HP Lovecraft (some only loosely), have Lovecraftian themes or strong references to Lovecraft or are clearly Lovecraft inspired.

Some might be fringe cases and not considered Lovecraftian by purists but are included because the atmosphere is suggestive of Lovecraft's work, there are clear nods to Lovecraft and in some case it is just because of name dropping or big tentacle monsters.

Missing on Trakt:
- Corpse-O-Rama (2001)
- The Whisperer in Darkness (2007)
- Lovecraft Chronicles (2009 Series)

14

The Mytharc is the overarching story developed in a series of episodes of The X-Files where Mulder and Scully investigate and expose an international conspiracy by an organization known as the Syndicate to develop a human/alien hybrid and suppress knowledge of the existence of extraterrestrials who plan to colonize Earth.

It should be noted that some key mythology characters also appear in Monster of the Week episodes; notably, Deep Throat, X and the Cigarette Smoking Man each appear in episodes which involve government activities.

Furthermore, as his role expanded, Walter Skinner appears in more Monster of the Week episodes.

15

A companion list to my X-Files Mytharc list.

It contains episodes that are only loosely connected to the Mytharc, which was the case for a few episodes in the early seasons that were sometimes only connected by a single scene or a character's first appearance.

In additional the best non Mytharc episodes can be found on this list as well - in a few cases only because of single scenes, guest stars or writers.

If you do not know what to watch beyond the Mytharc, go for the episodes written by Darin Morgan. You can't go wrong with his comedic episodes!

16

A collection of proto slasher movies that premiered before the 1980s starting with Psycho, which is the starting point for the evolving genre until it found its textbook definition with Halloween in 1978.

Definition: "A slasher movie is characterized by a villain who is skilled at killing and uses weapons other than firearms to stalk and target a group of young individuals, resulting in a significant number of victims. This villain may be either human or formerly human."

This list specifically focuses on the evolution of the Slasher genre and thus excludes pre-1960 films, generic serial killer flics, exploitation movies, giallos, krimis, and psychological horror films. While a few films from these categories have been included as they were influential in introducing certain tropes, such as the final girl, to the Slasher genre.

If I missed any movie you think that should be on this list or if you find some obvious mistakes please let me know and I'll make the appropriate adjustments.

Missing on Trakt:
- Aur Kaun? (1979)

17

This is a list of all movies that broadly comply to the definition of the Slasher genre and were released in the 80s. As always there are a few borderline cases you might consider an action movie, thriller or a giallo instead.

Genre definition: "Definition: A slasher movie is characterized by a villain who is skilled at killing and uses weapons other than firearms to stalk and target a group of young individuals, resulting in a significant number of victims. This villain may be either human or formerly human."

If I missed any movie or if you find some obvious mistakes please let me know and I'll make the appropriate adjustments.

Missing on Trakt:
- Blue Murder (1985) (IMDB: tt0207348)

18

By the start of the 1990s the market for Slashers had dried up and we entered an area of post-modern Slashers, where the genre reflected on itself. When Gus van Sant remade "Psycho" shot per shot we came full circle.

The genre went on life support...

Genre definition: "Definition: A slasher movie is characterized by a villain who is skilled at killing and uses weapons other than firearms to stalk and target a group of young individuals, resulting in a significant number of victims. This villain may be either human or formerly human."

If I missed any movie you think that should be on this list or if you find some obvious mistakes please let me know and I'll make the appropriate adjustments.

19

The genre survived in the 21st century thanks to the direct to the DVD market, the rise video streaming services and advances in digital filmmaking lowering the costs of making movies.

There was a short return to its exploitation roots, experimenting by new filmmakers, but mostly really bad low budget movies and remakes/reboots. Though there are a few gems to be discovered.

Missing on Trakt:
- Texas Vibrator Massacre (2008) (IMDB: tt1225757)

20

List of Slasher movies I have seen in this decade. Will this decade be a gem or junk?

Genre definition: "Definition: A slasher movie is characterized by a villain who is skilled at killing and uses weapons other than firearms to stalk and target a group of young individuals, resulting in a significant number of victims. This villain may be either human or formerly human."

If I missed any movie you think that should be on this list or if you find some obvious mistakes please let me know and I'll make the appropriate adjustments.

21

Movies, TV shows and episode written by Steven King or adapted from his work.

Short films and derivative works based only on characters or locations created by King are not part of this list.

Excluded, because too loosly based on the source material:
- The Lawnmower Man (1992)
- Woh (1998)
- Haven (2010-2015)

Furthermore the following are exluced as well:
- The Devil's Gift (1985) - not an adaptation but plagiarism.

Last Update: 23/08/29

22

Movies, TV shows and episode written by Clive Barker or adapted from his work.

Short films and derivative works based only on characters or locations created by Barker are not part of this list.

Last Update: 23/08/29

23

Movies, TV shows and episode written by Michael Crichton (1942-2007) or adapted from his work.

Short films and derivative works based only on characters or locations created by Crichton (e.g. 'Jurassic World' or the 'Westworld' show) are not part of this list.

For good measure I also included the movie "Physical Evidence" that Crichton did not write but direct.

24

Holiday-themed horror films or holiday horror are a subgenre of horror films set during holidays. Holiday horror films can be presented in short or long formats, and typically utilize common themes, images, and motifs from the holidays during which they are set, often as methods by which the villain may murder their victims.

This list focuses on such movies or segments of anthology movies that are set during christmas or feature christmas themes.

29

Feature films directed by Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980)

Excluded from this list:
- "Number 13 (1922)" - unfinished and unreleased, it's a lost film
- "Elstree Calling (1930)" - Hitchcock's contribution were the linking segments
- "Kaleidoscope (1967)" - cancelled, some footage can be seen in various documentaries.

TV directing works (not listed):
- "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (17 episodes)
- "Suspicion" (1 episode)
- "Startime" (1 episode)
- "Alcoa Premiere" (1 episode)
- "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" (1 episode)

30

Feature films directed by Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998)

The film "Those Who Make Tomorrow (1946)" is absent from this list, due to the fact that Kurosawa co-directed this particular movie against his will, owing to his contractual obligations with Toho studios at the time. It stands as the singular work in his oeuvre where he did not claim exclusive directorial credit. Consequently, this movie is generally not factored into the tally of his celebrated 30 films, although some filmographies do incorporate it.

31

Feature films directed by Martin Scorsese.

32

Feature Films directed by Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999).

33

Feature films directed by Francis Ford Coppola without alternative cuts.

Excluded:
- "The Bellboy and the Playgirls (1962) - re-edit with additional shot footage of the West German film "Mit Eva fing die Sünde an (1958)".
- "Battle Beyond the Sun (1962)" - re-edit of the Soviet film "Nebo Zovyot (1959)"
- "Tonight for Sure (1962)" - re-edit of two projects: "The Wild Open Spaces" by Jery Schafer and a short film directed by Coppola called "The Peeper".
- "The Young Racers (1963)" - Coppola was second unit director.
- "The Terror (1963)" - Coppola, originally serving as Corman's assistant, went beyond his designated schedule and budget, choosing not to simply shoot the remaining scenes in three days. Instead, he shot additional footage for eleven days and made changes to the script.
- "Distant Vision (2015)" is an ongoing experimental film project.

Notes on alternatives cuts:
- "Mario Puzo's The Godfather: The Complete Novel for Television (1977)" is a television adaptation that aired in four segments. The presentation combines the first two films into chronological order and features additional deleted scenes - a common practice for special TV versions, driven by marketing considerations and extended runtime for more commercial breaks.
- "The Godfather 1901–1959: The Complete Epic (1981)" provides a streamlined iteration of the 1977 TV adaptation, encapsulating the entire narrative within a singular, uninterrupted segment at a reduced runtime. It's noteworthy that HBO aired an unaltered, single-segment version in 2016, preserving the original runtime without any reduction.
- "The Godfather Trilogy: 1901-1980 (1992)" is a chronological version of the all three films with inserted deleted scenes.
- "The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone" (2020) represents Francis Ford Coppola's second endeavor to refine the third installment of The Godfather saga. The home video release had previously incorporated approximately eight minutes of additional exposition.
- "The Outsiders: The Complete Novel" (2005) is a re-edit of the 1983 film that also includes 22 minutes of previously deleted footage.
- "Apocalypse Now: Redux (2001)" re-edit of the 1979 film that includes 49 minutes of deleted footage.
- "Apocalypse Now: Final Cut (2019)" combines elements of the theatrical and redux version.

34

Feature films directed by David Lynch.

Additionally, the one-minute short film "Premonitions Following an Evil Deed" from "Lumière and Company" (1995) has been included in this list due to its esteemed status as essential viewing for aficionados of Lynch's work. Furthermore, I've taken the liberty of adding "The Short Films of David Lynch" (2002) DVD collection for those who yearn to delve deeper into his repertoire, although these primarily encompass his student, comissioned work and experimental web shorts.

David Lynch is also well-known for his iconic television series, "Twin Peaks."

Given the infrequent commercial success of the distinctive films Lynch crafts and the idiosyncrasies of box office dynamics, Lynch has openly declared his decision not to pursue any future theatrical feature films.

35

Feature films and TV episodes directed by Steven Spielberg.

Excluded:
- "Amazing Stories (1986)", cut together from the TV show of the same name for home video release.
- "Firelight (1964)", was directed by Spielberg as a teenager and was made on a budget of $500. It was screened once in a local cinema in Phoenix, AZ. Spielberg later lent the film to a production company that lost the reels when it folded shortly after.

36

Feature films directed by Oliver Stone.

37

Feature films directed by Ridley Scott.

Excluded:
- "Blade Runner - The Final Cut (2007)" - re-cut of the 1982 movie.

38

Feature films and TV episodes directed by Clint Eastwood.

39

Feature films directed by Quentin Tarantino.

40

Feature films directed by Christopher Nolan.

41

Feature films and TV episodes directed by David Fincher.

42

Feature films directed by John Carpenter.

To wrap up this list, I've included the two episodes directed by Carpenter from "Masters of Horror," namely "Cigarette Burns" and "Pro-Life."

43

Feature films directed by Wes Craven (1939-2015).

For good measure, I've also included the "Twilight Zone" episodes directed by Craven.

44

Feature films directed by David Cronenberg.

45

Feature films and TV episodes directed by James Cameron.

46

Feature films directed by Fatih Akin.

47

Feature films directed by Kevin Smith.

From Universal monsters to modern serial killers, creature features to slasher flicks — these are the films that keep us forever screaming in the dark.

Of course you do! Freaking out with your fellow audience member when something shocking happens, or jolting together as one during a primo jump scare, is one of the great pleasures of going to the movies. And over the past 100-plus years, the art form has figured out almost every possible way to frighten us, unnerve us, make our hair stand on us, chill us, thrill us and touch upon our most primal of fears. Then, just when you think it’s safe to go back to the theater, something else comes along that reminds us that there are always new ways to come us screaming in the dark. If you can count on the movies for anything, it’s that there seems to be an exhaustible supply of scares.

Naturally, everyone who helped cobble together the 101 best horror films of all time like scary movies. A lot. So we’ve gathered all of the old-school monster movies and modern serial-killer thrillers, the creature features and the slasher flicks, the canon-worthy creepfests from Universal and Hammer and A24, and come up this definitive list (or our definitive list, at least) of the greatest the genre has to offer. Just remember, as you read this list: It’s only a movie. Say that 101 times in a row, and you may just it make through this list…alive!

The DPP list of 'video nasties' was first made public in June 1983. The list was modified monthly as prosecutions failed or were dropped. In total, 72 separate films appeared on the list at one time or another. 39 films were successfully prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act but some of these films have been subsequently cut and then approved for release by the BBFC. The remaining 33 were either not prosecuted or had unsuccessful prosecutions. 10 films remain banned in the UK because they have not yet been resubmitted for classification by any distributors or have been rejected for classification.
