Fine, it has just enough personality and quirk to carry it to the finish line. It’s a bit forgettable and the characters feel like stereotypes, but the third act and funny moments along the way make up for that. Some of comedy is a little obvious or irksome, and generally it feels like Rhett Reese is pulling too much from the Joss Whedon playbook, which he did more successfully with Deadpool (but I suppose that comedy style wasn’t as played out when this came out). The filmmaking is competent, with the cinematography and editing having a distinct 2000s indie feel to them, but it never becomes truly interesting or visionary. It’s a mild recommendation, mostly because in many ways it feels like the watered down studio version of Shaun of the Dead.
