My expectations were nun when I went into this film and it didn't disappoint.
Fear and humour are opposite sides of the same coin: the unexpected. Sadly, even the jump scares are predictable in The Nun, so there is no respite from the boredom that will haunt you from the opening credits.
If you're looking for scares and fun, you'll find nun in this movie.
This second Conjuring spin-off failed to impress me yet again. Although "The Nun" has an interesting setting and an appealing mystery as the catalyst of the plot, the fifth part of the franchise degenerates far too often into a movie-like haunted train ride. The titular nun jumps into the picture for one jump scare after another. Any subtlety is, of course, lost as a result, and boredom sets in. Like the doll in "Annabelle", the demon nun doesn't have much to offer besides her creepy look. She is also demystified very quickly by her omnipresence. However, Demián Bichir and Taissa Farmiga get plus points from me, as they deliver solid performances in the leading roles. But it's definitely not enough for a recommendation from me.
I hoped a lot from this movie because of The Conjuring and Annabelle but it was not so good. Story was very simple. At most of the scenes i was laughing instead of getting shocked. I was also to blame for getting so hyped up!
A nun (maybe Marilyn Mason) with bad gas, burps her way around an old convent, and is stopped with a large amount of water and some red Alka-Seltzer.
Remember how the minions in Despicble me were funny, & the announcement of them having theit own movie filled you mouth with... "oh FFS! They're comic relief, they can't hold a story!" Rants?
Well conjuring 2 had this awesomely creepy bastard Nun popping up & she was the best part of that film.
They announced she would get her own flick & you member those 6 spooky parts from c2 & think, yeah that could be really good....
Well it's not, it's nun too good, it's another minions movie.
Half way through it becomes a mini zombie movie, the thing the ghost wants could easily have been done on the first night, but it faffs about opening doors & pointlessly burying a guy. Our heroes, I assume are under a bit of hypnosis type of magic (but it's not shown, so maybe they are just daft selfish gits) just fuck off & follow the slightest noise.
None of the scares worked (cinema I was in had the audio too loud, so the loud bits were off the charts, scared my hearing will be affected).
The nun wasn't anything near as creepy as what she was in conjuring 2.
A god awful exmachina moment save comes in exactly when you expect it
'bells were attached to coffins incase of accidental premature burial" (hmm someones gonna be buried & ring the bell) this setup to someone's nasty underground entrapment shoots its load within 10 minutes! (what, don't they think the audience will remember this nearer the end of the film, where it should have been used?)
A ghost kid being followed in the cemetery had me giggling as it was like a bad game of peekaboo.
*warning Many Nuns get harmed in this film,
Quite hilariously & mostly at once
This has to be the biggest disappointment of the year.
James Wan is the master of Horror and the only one who really know how to direct a horror movie nowadays .Period
So I was hyped for the Nun, didn't watch the trailer but only because I enjoyed the Conjuring 1 and 2 so much. So I was hoping the trend would continue! But sadly it didn't.
I'm usually not that bothered by scripts but this one is so bad. It is all to set up jump scares. AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN WORK. Even with your eyes closed you could see them coming from miles away! So bad!
But! I do have to point out that I really liked the whole setting, I think more people have mentioned it, but it has some kind of old Hammer feel to it. Really cool! Wish we saw that more these days!
Anyway, the performances are decent but the story is just so bad. It would've been great if it was bad in a good way, but sadly no. Hopefully we'll get a Conjuring 3 that can do the franchise justice again!!
Good photography and performances. But all the terror was contained in the jump scare ... It didn't scare anymore.
The least scary “scary movie” I’ve ever seen. I had such high hopes, but it was more of a comedy than a horror movie.
I found that this film failed to live up to the horror expectation as nothing was really scary, the fact that some bits had a slight comedy effect to them just seems wrong in what was supposed to be the horror of the year.
It does give the backstory to The Nun about what it is and how it was created but I thought it was kinda boring and couldve been made much more interesting as well as giving it more scare value.
A couple of good scenes but mostly just disappointing, with every atmospheric moment leading to a jump scare. Not a single scream in the cinema. The props by the cinema staff were scarier.
Maybe the problem was mine because I went with so much hype and expectation following The Conjuring series, but this movie lacks great story, great acting (literally there was no highlight of any of them, except Valak actress), the cinematography and the sets felt so poor and lackluster. It was a "normal" horror movie, nothing more. Go see with your friends, have a couple of jumpscares but don't expect leaving the theater wanting more of that abbey story. Valak/The Nun worked so much better in Conjuring 2 that here it felt a little comedic and used only for financial and marketing reasons.
Anyhow, the sound and practical effects were the highlight of the movie, sometimes being the only thing that scares you and puts you in the edge of your seat.
[Prime Video] So much is said about superhero multiverses that sometimes it is not mentioned that James Wan has turned his "The Conjuring" (2013) saga into a true horror multiverse, in which even an occasional figure is turned into protagonist of its own story. But despite being surrounded by an environment as disturbing as a convent of nuns with a vow of silence, the film becomes monotonous due to the repetition of the same resources, the nun never really ends up causing the fear that was expected of her and the staging sometimes prevents us from discerning what is happening on the screen.
I don't know whether it's because I watched this alone at home in a cold & rainy dark night or not, but I found this movie to be better than some of the comments here make it out to be. The plot devices are nothing new. However, they did deliver the chills and thrills.
The Nun franchise seems to be a spin-off of the Conjuring movie franchise. I haven't seen any of the Conjuring movies. The two main characters from Conjuring gets mentioned during flashbacks and in the end credits scene.
"Next time do use the shotgun."
The clip show recap at the start always makes me cringe. Not even one scene of this 1h36 movie even comes close to any of the scenes with Valak in The Conjuring 2. The Jumpscares are cheap and silly, so cliché and it's borderline laughable at times. I like American Horror Story alum Taissa Farmiga (sister of Vera Farmiga) but I'll admit this is not her best. That goes for every actor in this movie actually. Looks like they weren't generous with the number of takes. Terrible dialogue delivery. Valak lost some badassness in this.
It's not totally irredeemable though. It's at least very entertaining there's always something happening on-screen. Barely any setup really, it's straight to the good stuff we want to see. The setting with the nuns in a church is probably the best we could have had. The religious aspect is the biggest praise i'll give it. I would have taken even more religious stuff and lore because that's what kinda sets it apart from the regular ghost story. The effects look decent. The zombie-ish entity in the cemetary was my favorite part.
Overall not the worst horror movie ever but damn does it look bad after watching other movies in the same franchise. The Nun doesn't offer much as a spin-off in comparison to Annabelle.
Fairly decent storytelling, poor horror.
Not sure why this movie gets such a bad rap; I enjoyed it quite a bit, myself. It should be noted here, however, for the diehard "horror" aficionados that I would consider "The Nun" more of a suspense movie than actual horror. Granted, there are some scary "jump out of your seat" scenes, but overall, it's the overwhelming feeling of suspense and "you know it's coming" that makes this movie a good watch, IMO. Contrary to a lot of other reviews, I didn't find it "plodding" or slow...okay, well, yeah at times, it was pretty sluggish...but as an overall story, I found it a decent watch. The other movies in the franchise will scare the bejabbers out of you; this one only does that in one or two places, which is why I feel it should be seen more as a great psychological suspense movie. The scenery and overall cinematography was outstanding and the acting was - again, just my opinion - quite good. I'm watching the entire franchise again from the beginning, so maybe watching this first skewed my opinion, compared to others, but I found this to be a very watchable movie so long as you don't go into it expecting true horror (translation: not a lot of gore). Good enough that I'll watch it again! :thumbsup_tone2:
I liked the story, but it is not very terrifying.
When will we learn? The entire Conjurverse is wet garbage.
I started the film on Netflix quite impartially and without great expectations. I had seen Conjuring 1 once, part 2 not at all, and generally I did not know that this was supposed to be a kind of coherent franchise. The film got off to a very promising start - an abandoned monastery in the middle of Romania, home to some ancient devil-conjuring.
The characters are mostly decals without much character development across the length of the film. At the beginning, the priest made a good impression of a solid exorcist personality, but became increasingly anxious because of his perceived powerlessness against evil. The characterization of the young, mostly inexperienced nun is cliché-olé and not worth mentioning. The young Franco-Canadian (sic) is still the most exciting figure, one expects his death right at the beginning.
In the first two thirds of the film there are several beautiful jumpscare scenes that have frightened me, even if they were expected in tension. The effects are good, only the idea that all figures except the three mentioned are part of this creepy charade can be gotten very quickly at the beginning and you will not be able to get rid of it later until it is dissolved. If you like beautiful scare effects and like to be scared, you can definitely see the film. Only in the last third do you fight quite openly against the evil in the monastery and the shock effect quickly subsides due to the frequency of the effects. 5/10
Weak sauce all the way. I am in utter sorrow and disappointment for the direction horror films are heading to.
Brimming with creepy atmosphere but short on actual scares, this is a competently made, but ultimately underwhelming horror.
Like the first Annabelle, you expect an origin story and only get some meh in the middle story. It's still about Valach, but why was it here in the beginning, there's a 20 seconds summoning explanation and that's it. So it has a nun form, because it's in a nunnery, but it's taking another body at the end, so there's no reason for it to still be in the same form in the Conjuring movie.
Major disappointing thing in the movie: most paranormal things happening finally turn out as mere illusions with no consequence at all. It's quite common in this kind of movies, but just once or twice, and not through the whole thing, here it's almost all the time.
Otherwise the characters are interesting, the main trio with the hardened exorcist, new girl on the block and comic relief peasant wotks quite well. All the other nuns are anecdotal. But the demon has so much potential and is really underused. It seems to be super powerful at times, but almost doesn't do anything ever.
The whole final act turns ridiculous. Girl instantly turns powered up almost to saint level, and is clearly the only one that can do something. But just to be sure, they split in the dark catacombs to look for the demon. What ? Then everybody almost die but not really at least once. Predictable, not really well done, boring. Clearly half of the FX money went in the final fight, it shouldn't have.
It's not as awful as I was expecting, but it's not all that effective either. Relies on jump scares rather than building up dread, which is a waste considering all the creepy atmosphere they had at their disposal. The conclusion made me laugh, as it was taken straight from Demon Knight.
Woah! Woah! Woah!... Nice shootin, Tex!!!
I was really looking foward to The Nun, I’m a huge fan of The Conjuring franchise.
Sadly this was a major disappointment. The acting was fine, although the ‘French Canadian’ guy was a bit irritating at times.
The story is pretty straightforward, the scenery is beautiful and the jump scares are as expected.
Ok way to kill a coupke of hours, but not a movie ai’d watch again.
Terrible. The characters are 1 dimensional and completely uninteresting. The story looks like it was pulled from Hammer House in the 70's. An obviously rushed effort to cash in on the character of The Nun. Avoid.
I don’t know if was good or bad movie. But I can’t see it again.
awesome environment / atmosphere; nice music with awkward acting, poor/ "empty"/ lazy script.
Only a miracle could save this movie. It was just too simple, cute at some points, but not scary at all
“The Nun” is weighed down by a poor script, however the movie boasts a chilling atmosphere, admirable set designs and genuine scares, which places it above a lot of other horror movies.
It was a big disappointment for me! I expected so much from this movie and the hype behind it. It was good don't get me wrong but not that good! The end was good, connected everything together.
I was very hyped for this movie when I saw a small sneak peek in the previous in the franchise. I think a lot of people expected a lot more. Thing is, there were hints of a really great atmosphere and the soundtrack was also nicely done. Yes, the normal scary soundtrack, but it helped the atmosphere. I think the setting was great, the problem was the story I think. It was too simple. You could say the story in one sentence I think. It's really too bad. Did I enjoy it? Sure, but I was definitely disappointed because with the actress who was born was the role like this (Aarons), you would want more and more and darker. It's basically the beginning of the franchise, this supposed to be as scary and story-heavy as Valak himself
After Watching The Nun Appearances in the conjuring i hope this movie is good
Although this is meant to be an origin story, I felt like I learnt nothing. Except blood, father who doesn't understand evil but heals evil, more blood and french guy. The plot twists got me afew times, but most were ruined because I understood what was going on faster than characters could lollop their way into evil. The visuals could have been a lot better, but the casting makes up for it. Also, I didn't giggle through this, which I think is an achievement. Laughed at the comedy, stared blankly at the horror, danced through the jazz, and expressed afew kind words through the magic.
Finally got around to watching this. This kind of paled in comparison to other movies in the Conjuring universe.
The Nun serves its purpose as a puzzle piece in the Conjuring universe. If you wanted more time with Valak or if you just like spooky, demonic horror, this is a good watch.
A little slim on plot, but what do you want? A Priest, and a nun, travel to Romania to investigate the death of a nun. What they find is a sinister force. The movie has a high budget - by horror standards, great acting, an eerie score, it's dark and creepy. Okay, there is some humor from the character, Frenchy, and I hate humor in horror, but it is so quick as to barely be there.
I absolutely love supernatural horror, especially when it involves demons or Satan. If that's what you like, you won't be disappointed.
The only thing scary about this movie is the jump scares. Some of the jump scares are predictable. The plot is very simple and not really that good.
Not a good movie
The movie was so fucking dark at times, I could barely tell what was happening. Can't get scared if I can't see shit. In any case, The Nun was superior to the Annabelle movies, but I liked The Conjuring entries better - better characters and a little more depth in the storytelling. Other than the appearance of Valak in The Conjuring 2, the tie-in with the rest of the universe, i.e. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga felt kind of tacked on at the end. It was literally tacked. Like someone else said, the two main characters were one dimensional, but the character of Frenchie was interesting, at least.
Don’t get the hate for this one. As I watch all of the Conjuring movies in order for the first time, so far this is one of the better ones. Freaky as hell. Nun design is great. Good characters. Good stuff
Just started watching The Nun as the first movie of the sequel from 'The Conjuring Universe' (in the chronological order). The scenes of the first night at the church where so cool! Loved the story about the portal and the church in general.
Still halfway through the movie and loving it. Have to admit though, religious movies are my favorite kind of horror movies.
"Oh My God Boiz, It's The NUN!"
I don't recommend this movie, but I do recommend checking out the YouTuber named CORDZ, who makes great movie related videos. I mean that's where the quote is from.
the start of it was just a mess, trying so hard by adding too much it to it, and mostly depending on the jump scaring ...
if they only focused on the main spirit or curse and its background it would've been better i guess cause towards the end it got better when we start seeing only the nun. also i liked how it was related to the conjuring ! it made a lot of sense
buuut as a horror it sucked sorry
This is my rewatch since I have seen it years ago upon its released. As listed in the Conjuring Chronicles, this film should be seen first since the story evolved around 1952 and this Nun would come out often in the Conjuring sequels. There were a lot of jumpscares and her scary staring face is always present during Halloween, so this film is not that bad.
It is nice to have a flick that is actually scary in my mix this Halloween season. The Nun remains creepy throughout, doesn't rely on a working knowledge of the other Conjuring films, and brings some scares beyond the JUMP SCARE that you see in their trailer. Worth checking it out. 7/10
What i watch, was not scary, they not have a little bit sense, nothing scary nothing, i apreciate the action but was bad very very bad.
It started really promising, but I am not impressed by the movie. Something evil, coming from hell, possessing someone. We have all seen that, countless times! The trailer was more thrilling than most of the movie.
Honestly more of a comedy than horror. Which it has nun of.
Great job horror movie is over
Wow great film, amazing Horror
The latest in The Conjuring series, The Nun is an incredibly terrifying horror film. The story follows a priest and a nun in training who are sent to investigate a Romanian nunnery in which a nun was found dead of an apparent suicide, but they soon discover an evil presence and begin to suspect that there’s more going on than there appears to be. Both Demian Bichir and Taissa Farmiga give strong performances and director Corin Hardy does an especially good job at creating an atmospheric tone that’s full of suspense. Additionally, the writers build the mystery of what happened at the nunnery fairly well and find a clever way to tie the story into the other Conjuring films. A bone-chilling supernatural thriller, The Nun is one of the best entries in the series.
It has a good creepy atmosphere but that's about it. It isn't very scary besides a few jump scares that don't really work and it's boring with dull characters.
I liked this better through the first 1/2-2/3 of the movie. Some of the jump scares really got me, and the vibe was dark and contaminating.
While the film continued to be visually, cinematographically lovely, something about the whole Christian trope grew a little tiring. Of course I wouldn’t expect anything else from a movie about a priest and a nun and a cloister, but the repetition made it lose its power for me, unfortunately. Ok here’s a scary nun. And another. And another, seen it before.
I wish they would make more horror movies that aren’t just based off of some Christian idea. The entire “evil” vs “Christian religion” is just silly. Instead have some where priests and holy people from all kinds of religions and faiths have to actively work together to fend off some evil force. That’s content I’d love to see.
Did enjoy the bits of humour though.
“Holy shit!”
“The holiest.”
it wasn't scary but I do loved the movie. I did go out to buy it
I'm a hard person to scare but this one is good. I love the mystery of the story but to be honest, as a minister and a believer, demon, evil and Satan is real but if you know who you are and what you are in God's son Jesus Christ, the 3 evil personas will never rule you. Christ already won over him (Satan). All you have to do is believe, claim and act on his promise. He, his word and his love is greater than these evils. One day. Love this movie. Awesome.
ok, the script wasn't good, neither the development of the movie, although it has its chilling somehow scary moments that made me to feel fear, so regardless its lack of good story it scares.
I adore the Conjuring films. Thought the Annabelle films were lame. This was gonna be my tiebreaker... will this Universe these folk are building continue along the lines of lameness or greatness. Greatness it is!
The set pieces were really good, the camera work wasn't bad either, but the lack of originality and a compelling main villian make 'The Nun' not a good movie.
Not to metion the awful attempts for connecting it with the previous 'Conjuring' movies...
nothing special really, nothing scary about it
A balloon blow with a promotion that could not stand up to reality. Too fantastic-naive almost funny tale...
Nothing on James Wan's conjuring level but It wasn't poor, had plenty of action/good effects that entertained me and It's good to know the back story of the (Nun) also there wasn't much to the plot and thought it was rushed, could of been better.
Garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage.
I love conjuring but this movie is a disappointment. It is very boring.
Great comedy, a lor of expectation, but the only thing i get was laugh.
I hope because the brand Conjuring was present, tha they came to something not expected, but really low movie.
Great movie actually, it was perfect!! Only if it had been a little, just even "A LITTLE" scary, then it'd be good
Some good scares but The Conjouring reigns supreme.
Very meaningless film on several occasions. As the other nun says, "I can not say anything because we have secrets among us, nuns," and then loudly and clearly she speaks everything, while the other nun is near.
This is so bad. Was this a parody?
It felt like it.
This was the worst horror movie I've watched for several years. Nothing at all in comparison to Conjuring, Conjuring 2, Annabella, Creston of Annabelle who are all in the same 'universe'.
Trust me. Avoid this crap.
La película siento que le falta como más tensión
Crearon esta película sólo por crearla sin antes pensar una historia con sentido alguno ,puro susto y nada de historia
Lots of jump scares for a pretty simple but enjoyable horror movie.
I am unable to watch this movie trying to watch it but not able to
I thought it was okay; nothing too fancy. Although I do like the Romanian setting with some of the set designs and atmospheric night shots. In terms of overall presentation and what it has to offer, I'd put this on par with Insidious: The Last Key (2018) (the fourth Insidious film that came out earlier this year). The "funny" bits of dialogue are meant for us to be amused by, similar to how the two goons in the Insidious series are (comic relief). So yes, we were supposed to laugh and giggle at those parts. However, there was a particular scene that reminded me of Silent Hill (2006) where the protagonist slowly and quietly creeps past the nurses (nuns, in this case) as if they borrowed the idea and replaced the characters, just not as effective. I had some Underworld (2003) and Fright Night 2 (2013) vibes with that end fight, but I like how they tied it to the Conjuring series though. At least the sisters were pretty cute.
The beginning and the atmosphere well, then it decays, it's not bad, they unite it with the others of the Warren file. Valak is a son of his mother
Wasn't a bad movie by all means, but it definitely didn't deliver. It felt more drama-like than horror in my opinion.
Decent and entertaining, though strangely filmed and a little weird to watch. Didn't find it that scary, but maybe worth a watch on the small screen rather than a cinema.
Dumb as hell. Not good. So many jump scares you're desensitized to them by the end.
a typical american movie with nothing much to show. the act are okay, the production is okay, there are some scare scenes BUT the plot is so predictable
comedy of the year

Just like the demon...there is nothing to save this film...
If you cannot make a decent horror flick with a convent in Romania, a set of creepy nuns and a good setup from a previous film than you should never make another film. That is definitely true of Corin Hardy (the director of the film). The film lacks the impetus and coherence of The Conjuring and it's successor. While one feels that there is room to disagree about the success or failures of the Annabelle franchise, there really isn't any room to disagree about the awfulness of this film.
