It's been 11 months since I watched the episode before this one. In the meantime, I watched a whole lot of other shows. But when I decided to resume watching Penny Dreadful and started playing this episode... Wow! It truly felt like I was watching a whole other level of television. This show has always been high above the average, but this episode in particular is worlds apart from what there's usually on Netflix or HBO or whatever.
Only two characters (and the occasional appearance of the doctor), tons of dialogue, and almost an hour of the best TV I've watched in ages. Absolutely mesmerising!
I feel that I didn't care for the storyline as much as I should have. Still, it's necessary to indicate that it IS getting together, finally. Well, it's a small season...
But my god, Eva Green nails it so damn hard. What an amazing actress!
Rory's one to admire, as well... specially with the difference perceived when he is portraying Dracula. Very nice job!
All in all, what makes me keep coming back for PD is the acting (and, not as much on this episode, but even so) the great photography.
Wow! Captivating to say the least.
The best one so far.
Eva Green deserves all the awards!!!!
In the Vanessa Ives Timeline when exactly was her stay at the mental facility? I thought it was before meeting the cut-wife but yet she is speaking the verbis diablo in this episode. Was that the Vanessa with Dr. Seward speaking maybe? That part was a bit confusing.
The acting and the atmosphere of this show is intense. I loved how the viewer doesnt leave the white room either.
this episode really felt like a stage play, like i was watching theatre. the intensity of the single set and two actors. wow.
i think this was my favorite episode. and rory kinnear's distinction between 3 characters in one scene was pretty great acting.
the only thing that took me out was dracula being lucifer's brother??? i knew it was coming but i was still hoping he wasn't doing to say his name. i couldn't take it seriously! i can't process a vampire being stronger or more powerful than lucifer.
I have mixed feelings about this one. It's really well done, the fact that we never leave the cell is a brillant idea, both Green and Kinnear are amazing. But not I'm not a big fan of how things turn out.
The nice orderly doing his job and starting to care for Vanessa. Yeah it's nice and toucing, and interesting to see him before he died, but it's way too long. The makeup scene is soooo creepy. Also I guess it's supposed to try to make her remember that she can look better than the mess she had become in her cell, but she probably had not seen herself in a mirror in months, and compared to how she was normally, the result would ne disappointing.
Then come Lucifer! This scene is stunning. Both actors are incredible! Scaring her. Seducing her. Convincing her. Full of confidence and power. Already talking of ruling the world and dethroning God. Tension keeps rising. And then here comes Dracula...
and poof... Lucifer is instantaneously turned into a scared little bitch terrorized because his big brother's here. I suppose it's meant to make him appear as super badass and even scarier, it also explains the two brothers story from season 2, but it seriously killed all the tension there.
Then same scene with the second one trying to get Vanessa. There again, independantly from the interruption, the scene is amazing. Kinnear's three characters are really distinct and the second performance is as great at the first one.
And Vanessa holds her own against both, being the witch she is (but was she supposed to already be that powerfula t the time ?).
So great great performances, but really disappointed at this poor way to force Dracula as the Bigger Bad. Guess this means we won't see Lucifer from now.
This is the best episode of the whole series by far. It's mind blowing. Beautiful.
Eva Green you're so freaking amazing!
Best episode so far ! Eva Green is fucking AMAZING!
Fell asleep twice watching this one.
