I came across this documentary while going through Roper's old "best of" lists. At the root of this movie is the passing of a mother and the discovery that she had left behind boxes of diaries. Her son decided to read the diaries and realized that his mother was a very unhappy woman. I think the most interesting question that isn't answer is "did she want people to read her diaries"? I almost have to assume that the answer is "Yes" because she seemed to have left them out in plain sight.
Anyway, the son gives the doc a little artificial drama by first painting his father in a questionable light and then later switching gears to show the true story of what happened with his parents. I guess without this twist maybe the doc wouldn't be able to stand on the premise that "boy realizes his parents weren't happy"?
