A competent supernatural horror story with an interesting folklore angle that's enough to hold interest. The slow pace makes it drag a lot in places, though. This film leans heavily on the drama aspect and its on-the-nose metaphor. While I find the drama enjoyable for the most part, it doesn’t really have much in terms of emotional traction and there's one insufferably obnoxious character keeping me from liking this film more. I also would've preferred the supernatural element to be spookier even though there are some decent scares. Overall, this was definitely an interesting film and I'd love to see more South African horror. It's under the title 'The Soul Collector' on Shudder if you're curious.

I am always drawn to foreign horror films from exotic places. This South African film packed quite a lot into its tiny story, being intriguing, heartwarming and terrifying all at once.
