I'm in tears. One of the most moving and powerful movies I've ever seen. Many people don't understand this film because of the slow pace. But the patience watchers will be rewarded with a touching story.
Haunting and sad, this is a powerful piece, and like the ghost at the heart of the story, this is sure to stay with me for a long time to come.
Watching someone eat a bowl of cereal for 20 minutes was ridiculous and pointless
Beautiful work of art and poetry. It truly is a ghost story, with incredibly artful and aesthetic still shots especially in the first 2/3 of the movie. Each and every one was a piece of art. Thoroughly enjoyable.
We really hadn’t expected for it to hit so hard toward the end though. Sad and nihilistic was fine. Somehow they topped that.
Well that was a very heartwarming gripping deep tale with some good creative effects for the picture. I'm not normally a fan of a film with a lack of dialogue but this one really did speak to me through It's creative body language actions and It's left me mind blown.
Goodness me, this film is the most polarising film I think I have ever seen. There appears to be one group of people who unresolvedly hate the film and another who absolutely love it but nothing in between.
I can see why people would walk-out in cinema showings and hate the movie with a passion. Nothing happens as such, there is little to no story but I maintain that this is the point. When we are gone, life goes on slowly, inexorably, if we could observe it as a ‘ghost’ that is how it would seem. We have no idea but I would guess most of use through some longing would try and connect with those we loved and knew, we would return to places that were familiar to us, similar to the zombies in Romero’s ‘Dead’ films would we gravity to places that meant something to us, were important, in our lives.
There isn’t much dialogue and there are long stretches, 20 minutes or more, where little happens, the pie-eating scene is famous in the annoyance for some, yet for others, it shows the solitude of grief and how it can be dealt with. One real bugbear for me though, when there was some small dialogue, is Casey Affleck’s insistence on the realism of ‘mumblecore’. I could understand little of what he said. I’m old and my hearing is not what it was but it is also okay, I’ve had it tested recently, he mumbles and it’s hard to understand what he says. So annoying. Luckily as a ghost, he says nothing. Rooney Mara has I would less dialogue but skilfully acts emotions with just her face or even how she walks to and from a room or to a door.
This is not a film for the average film-goer and in particular the multiplex ‘action movie-romantic comedy’ crowd but if you are patient prepared for a quiet thoughtful film then you might be able to take something away from it.
I’m somewhere in between the two camps. I can see that the film does drag on and showing the futility of staying in a place where you no longer belong, trying to change something you can’t change and not letting go in glorious slow-time with little dialogue or on-screen stimulation is perhaps, whilst making a valid point, foolhardy. The idea of the ghost being a traditional Halloween sheet is a clever touch and seems to be saying it is a ghost but it doesn’t matter. To be utterly fair to Lowery and his cast I stuck without and overall I enjoyed it more than it rubbed me up the wrong way. I’m not sure about the time-traveling aspect or what it was adding to the story or what it was trying to say, perhaps ‘this goes on forever’ it is truly the circle of life and there is no end or beginning unless you choose to leave it. Only love helps you leave it. Perhaps, maybe?
Then again if you can stand the slow pace and the odd story this is probably the point you make your mind up about the story and what it means. It could mean different to each and every one of use.
Then again you could intensely dislike it, it will not be the first film that will make you feel this way nor the last, you could equally really like it. Who knows?
One of my favorite movies of the year. While this film obviously isn't for everyone it tried something incredibly ambitious and for many of us it really really worked. It's just so nice to see something that is as visceral as this film. I wish more projects like this could be made.

Beautiful allegory about how difficult to depart from this world and leave behind the old life of ours. There is usually something unfinished business remains, which impede us to move on peacefully.
"We build our legacy piece by piece and maybe the whole world will remember you or maybe just a couple of people, but you do what you can to make sure you're still around after you're gone".
A Ghost Story is a simple and yet puzzling story upon looking deeper into it's roots. Everything from great acting, directing, cinematography and excellent framing.
Can be described as a fascinating piece of art, that if I told you it's the same director of "Peter's Dragon", you'll think it's a joke. A little bit too obvious with the main message. The whole thing is still emotional moving though.
I can see why some may think this is pretentious, but it did something that's so close to our thoughts and isn't at all shallow. However, the middle part literally explains the meaning of the story by a certain character. But strangely what that character said was pretty thought-provoking. It's the best/worst scene of the film.
Oh and the 5 minute pie scene made hungry. Was it chocolate? Because I want some.
This could have been a short film. 45 minutes would be enough to send the message. I can understand indie, no mainstream and whatever you want, but this can only be remembered as a boring movie that you will never ever watch again. I really like the idea, but after 10 or more shots with totally no movements it becomes so repetitive that the initial effect get lost in thoughts like "oh my god another one" or "how long was the last one? 10? 15 minutes?".
Personal advice is to watch until you get bored, jump at around 60 min, try not to kill yourself and watch other 2-3 shots, finally jump to the last 5 minutes.
I had a mental breakdown after watching this. Never before has a movie made me so intrigued but also experience all 5 stages of grief. The slowness of the everyday scenes was irritating at first, but then I started to realize that they were an intimate experience with the characters where you could feel all of their emotions as your own.
Inesquecível. Uma crônica da vida / morte e toda a sua complexidade
Poignant, poetic and haunting. #recommend
I'm disappointed this is a very very boring movie
Rooney Mara eats a pie for FIVE MINUTES STRAIGHT and I loved it.
If you would have told me that Casey Affleck is going to win an oscar and the next movie he is going to do he is going to be a ghost in a bedsheet I would have told that's too stupid to actually happen. Well... What legacy will you leave behind?
Boring as hell. I don't even know whether to consider it a movie.
There is no dialogue, the shots are unnecessarily long and interminable, showing nothing. I understand if you do a long shot with something happening in the meantime, but seeing a dead body for 1 full minute without anything happening, or seeing 5 MINUTES OF A DEPRESSED WOMAN EATING A CAKE WTF, OR SEEING A 50 YEAR OLD MAN TALKING ABOUT HOW SMALL WE ARE COMPARED TO THE UNIVERSE AND THAT LIFE IS SHIT MY GOD I DIDN'T NEED A 7 MINUTE LONG SHITTY DIALOGUE THAT DOESN'T TELL ME ANYTHING NEW AND DOESN'T MAKE ME THINK ABOUT ANYTHING.
The movie tries to make you emotional but with me, a sensitive person who cries over every little thing, it didn't make me feel shit.
Maybe I was expecting too much from this movie given the postive reviews on Letterbox or the various comments on Reddit that speak so highly of this movie, but for me it's shit, one of the worst movies I've ever seen and I don't know what people see in seeing two ghosts talking to each other with their thoughts.
Don't waste your time seeing this shit
Oh and the ending that wants to be so fucking mysterious just annoys.
3.5/10
A drearily beautiful and emotionally haunting concept.
If you’ve ever sat alone and let your mind wander during a moment of melancholy or déjà vu, the concept of this film may seem familiar to you.
The slow build does eventually take you somewhere significant. It’s definitely worth watching, especially for those patient and open minded enough to see where it all ends up.
Wasn't really feeling it in the first quarter. But, got whooshed off my feet thereon. Brilliant editing and cinematography.
Incredibly slow paced so you definitely need to be in the mood for that. An absolutely beautiful & touching film nonetheless.
Actually loved this movie! there's a lot of scenes I wasn't expecting. Very edge of your seat horror!
Obsessed with this directorial style of long takes, minimal dialogue and mere poetic aesthetic, just to express a Ghost's POV
I have been wanting to watch A Ghost Story for the past month, so when my local theater started showing it a week ago as part of its Indie lineup, I couldn't wait. And I get why it has a 91% on RottenTomatoes and lots of positive reviews and all that but... man, is it a boring movie.
I get that it is a well-made with great editing, direction and some amazing long single-shot scenes. I get the poetic message that it is trying to send, and it does a good job with that. However, I just can't get over the fact that the entire movie is incredibly boring. I honestly could not wait for this movie to finish (which is tough to do with a movie that is less than 90 minutes long).
Imo don't watch this in theaters. Wait for it to come out on home video. At least you can fast-forward at home...
Have heard so many great things about this film. Awaiting to watch with friends. Look fuckin spooky! Is very slow. Is very long. It will haunt you in the fact that it keeps you thinking about this movie for days and days after. Very deep.
Extraordinary ghost story!!! the music accompanied so perfectly this movie
Rooney and Casey are great together
So boring. Probably the worst ghost movie
I went through several stages when watching this movie. My first thoughts were "what the hell am I watching?". Then you see Rooney Mara eat a pie for 5 min, literally. Then there is a weird, almost misplaced second act that I'm torn on. By the end, I don't think I fully got it but we were taking about it for 15 min after.
I'd highly suggest watching with the volume up or with headphones because the score is huge part of the movie.
It's slow, it's artsy, but it's a thinker.
A Ghost Story is a very slow indie drama. Seeing as how this is an A24 production, this part should come as no surprise.
Now, given the title, one might think this is a horror movie, but it's not. I'd much prefer to call this a romance or a love story, though not in the traditional sense. This is not a happy movie.
The primary focus here is Affleck, and Mara, as a couple. Very soon into the story, Affleck's character dies, which leads to him becoming our titular ghost.
For the most part, the movie is very soft and quiet. There is little dialog, and many scenes that play out in one long shot - the best example being Mara sitting down to eat an entire pie.
This is definitely a film you must be in the right mood to watch. I originally watched this the year is was released and was blown away by the emotional impact. Rewatching it, it just didn't hit the same way. Obviously the movie didn't change, I did.
What remains is that A Ghost Story is about love, loss, and closure.
The movie was pretty slow for me to be honest. I could see what they were trying to convey, but I feel like it could have been done in a better way. The one scene with the guy talking during the party seemed a little preachy considering it was one of the few dialogue-heavy scenes.
Blimey, A Ghost Story is a right peculiar film innit. It's about some bloke who snuffs it and becomes a proper spook, wandering around with nowt but a sheet on. Quite barmy if you ask me. His bird is proper gutted when he pops his clogs. She bawls her eyes out and eats a whole pie while sobbing on the kitchen floor. Proper sad that is.
The ghost just stands around staring at stuff with his beady ghost eyes. He knocks some things over like books and that. Gives some people a right scare. The film is dead slow but also strangely moving in parts. Makes you think about grief and that.
The ending is well weird, with some time travel business I still don't get. But the music is top notch. Proper haunting melodies. And the acting is not half bad neither. I won't say it's the best film I've seen, but it sticks in your noggin for days after. A real thinker this one. Not for everyone but worth a butcher's if you fancy something different. A bit of an oddity but I quite liked it truth be told.
Slooooowww, depressing, nihilistic and thought-provoking. A Ghost Story about life, death, grief, regret, loneliness and time. Most of it is done with no dialogue and a sheet covering the face of our main character but the way it still expresses feelings visually is remarkable.
Some incredibly long takes that make the movie stand out but some of them were too damn long, like the pie scene—what a chore to get through, even though the acting and the emotions were there. I found a bit of humor here and there throughout the movie and i'm not sure if that was intentional or not (ex: the scene where he throws the plates) it was so overly melodramatic that I found it funny. Same for some other scenes. This is not horror despite the title but it got eery and even scary in some parts for some reason: a mix of "omg is someone watching me now", the creepy set and some genuinely scary thought-provoking stuff. I question the inclusion of the exposition monologue, it also goes against the quietness the movie had prior and after the scene. It's litterally the only scene where there's a lot of talking and it kinda breaks the tone, especially when you get back to the quietness after. I enjoyed the message behind that monologue though.
Like the aspect ratio, the score and the choice of lighting even though it's probably just a filter, it looks good. The twist was a bit far fetched but I like what it adds to the overall story.
This was a pretty cool movie. It’s definitely a pretty slow moving movie, so I can definitely see why some people can loose interest, but I think if you can find the patients to watch it till the end, you’ll really like. A ghost story is the perfect name for this movie!

Loved it so much. Beautiful.
There are million other less boring and time wasting ways to do this movie and deliver its message. Yet here we are. One of the easiest to watch, just fast forward through the whole thing.
this movie is just amazing

Poetic. We're all a little meaningless. Life is waiting and then we die.
