i love love love katherine isabelle so maybe i'm a bit biased regarding this movie. but i genuinely liked it. i didn't really know what to expect from the movie because i hadn't watched a trailer beforehand, i just watched it because of her. and i was pleasantly surprised.
the character of mary is loveable - at first she's appalled and shocked with this new world she's slipped into which is an undestandable reaction. as the movie progresses she's getting more and more cold-blooded but not in a 'evil' kinda way... she just learns to cope with all the stuff she sees in her own way.
the other characters she meets are diverse, unique and interesting - noone is really boring or predictable. and surprisingly noone is annoying either.
the music was great - i loved the 'ave maria' when she's working.
the only thing that 'bugged' me a bit was the impossibilty of saying how much time passed between two scenes/cerrtain events. it's nothing big, mostly you pick up through conversation if a lot of time has passed or not, so really nothing too confusing.
some people thought that the ending was a bit abrupt but i don't think so. i liked the ending just like it was because i couldn't imagine it any other way - some fairytale happy ending or her doing this illegal stuff for a long, long time would not be right for this movie, i would destroy the flow.
all in all a great movie with interesting characters, a unique story and a beautiful katherine isabelle.
Dark and morbid rape-revenge/body horror film and I enjoyed it a lot. It's about a medical student who is deperate for money slowly descents into the world of body modification. Going into this I didn't realize the lead is played by Katherine Isabelle. So that's a nice surprise. The story is really unique and not as I expected it to be. It's not just a revenge story but there's a lot of interesting things going on. The pacing is slow but it knows how to switch things up and keep me intrigued. Isabelle plays her character incredibly well and so does everyone involved. I really dig the whole vibe and the score. Although the display of body modification parts isn't at extreme level but it does make me squeamish. Worth a watch!
delightful if you love body horror, probably a lot less so if you don't. it isn't a serious horror, but it suits itself just fine.
Katharine Isabelle stars in the disturbing horror film American Mary. When a med student named Mary Mason runs into financial trouble she starts an underground extreme body modification service, offering a number of unconventional surgeries. Isabelle gives a very strong performance, but the rest of the cast is fairly bland. And, the plot seems to meander without much direction. However, the makeup and practical effects are amazing; though it can get a little gruesome. American Mary has an interesting concept, but it doesn’t really go anywhere.
Not a bad little story. I wanted to like it more. It doesn't take itself serious, which helps the movie have an atmosphere. But I think it should have taken itself serious more, more often, to also create a horrific atmosphere. I liked the main character, but I wished I'd seen other sides to her. She was a bit flat and just took us from beginning to end with no real intrigue. You can't rely on some classical music for emotional impact, you have to create some meaning. The actress did great.
It could have been more. Mary could have been a classic character but she isn't. Her character change was too sudden, even considering what happened to her. It could have delved into human psycology way more considering the subject matter. This is just my preference and most people won't have an issue with this movie. It was worth a watch and I admire some parts of it. For me, one watch is enough.
This movie is really nice and Katherine isabelle once again was amazing as always
