The movie is intended to cover three Anne books: "Anne of Avonlea," "Anne of the Island" and "Anne of the Windy Poplars", though in fact the storyline concentrates mostly on the Windy Poplars plot. Many events are removed, shortened and rearranged, several characters are merged into one, and since I have recently read these novels, I was bothered by the changes from the original version, though in itself the movie is an entertaining and heartening watch. The ending is rather close to the novel and quite moving. However, from among the Anne books the movie is based on, I liked "Anne of the Island" the best and it is really disappointing that Anne university years are completely excised from this production. I really enjoyed reading about Anne's friends from Redmond college and I particularly loved the character of the colourful and humorous Phil Gordon, it is such a pity that this part of Anne's life never appears in the film, I would have definitely given the movie a better review had this storyline been included. But this is the only problem I have with the film, since otherwise it is a charming production.
