Are you there God? It's me, a fan of movies like this, which no one makes anymore. Please let Kelly Fremon Craig make 100 more movies

Also, "Son of a Preacher Man" might be the single most inspired song choice of all time. :joy:

Are You There God? is a wonderful film. Although the story centers around a young woman and puberty, the subplots offer enough complexity to capture the interest of parents, especially those with young daughters. The characters are charming, the comedy is intelligent, and the narrative is heartwarming.

I was able to see a early screening to this and although I went into it pretty blind as far as what the movie was about I still had high hopes due it being directed by the same director as Edge of Seventeen. Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson are both great as well as the whole cast and this movie has some comedic moments and realism of awkwardness in a young coming of age movie. Not that every movie has to have something dramatic or big happen to be able to be told but this movie never quite captivated me as an audience member in the story. The runtime was progressing and the movie was nearing an end and I was asking myself when something was gonna happen. Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret is a sweet story of a girl moving to a new town and growing up at least what she thinks is growing up getting her first period and sure it’s a sweet simple story but you leave kinda disappointed that nothing really happened besides watching the life of a 6th grader during one school year.

After knowing of the book and seeing the film get great reviews, I had to check it out. To be clear, I am not the target audience for this movie whatsoever. It is undeniably solid and the audience it is meant for will surely love it.

A sincere heartfelt adaptation of a most beloved teen novel. Everyone was perfectly cast, but my favourite were the parents. They were so loving and tried so hard to be good parents.

Since I am not a girl, I can't really relate too much to what happened in this movie, but I can still enjoy it. This is a very good coming-of-age story that really portrays those awkward middle school years well.

The only bad thing about this film as it seemed to have ended abruptly. It is a very well written piece about the coming of age for young woman, and therefore follows a young girl in the 6th grade as she deals with the many changing aspects of life and how the lingering moment of getting her fist period is the essence of everything making sense. Its personal, sensitive, funny, and sweet which makes for such pleasurable good feeling entertainment that makes the audience fall instantly in love with the characters. Although the plot development and climax was smooth and made a lot of sense, the ending came suddenly making the audience angry as you thought it wasn't done yet.

A well-done adaption of a book from our childhood. I had forgotten the story, but the chant of “we must increase our bust” brought back memories. Not a film I would necessarily recommend, but maybe good for young girls like the book was back in the day. A celebration of girls growing into women.

A beautifully done adaptation of a beloved book, got me in my feels and addressed topics most young girls would be able to relate to.

It's a good movie about family relationships, faith and personal growing during adolescence. But the duration of the film is quite short for what it has to say.

One of the sweetest movies I've seen in a while. I had one big smile on my face.

I'm always up for coming-of-age movies, and "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" is a wonderful representative of the genre. Lead actress Abby Ryder Fortson plays the title role of eleven-year-old Margaret very convincingly. She is authentic, likeable, and funny. The movie also never drifts too far into the dramatic, instead remaining light-hearted overall, which also fits in well with the general mood. It also certainly helps that the plot is set in the 1970s. This means that the focus is not on any social media stuff but remains on direct interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, the subplot about religion complements the general story about the transition to puberty wonderfully. For coming-of-age fans, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" is a must-see, just like director Kelly Fremon Craig's first film, "The Edge of Seventeen."

I used to read this book over and over when I was younger…. Such a nice, wholesome movie about trying to grow up to fast…. We don’t see many movies like this…. So sit back and enjoy this wholesome, innocence….a change of pace that is sweet and unspoiled… I hope more movies are made like this…

Silly movie . Couldn't watch beyond 10minues

Poorly sold comedy, all the trailers seemed to hint the main theme was the hypersexualization of tween girls, instead it switches to a stronger emphasis on the religious choice in the second half. A bit inconclusive, with a predictable ending, too many themes not covered in depth, and at the end the not credible story of a too perfect US family.

Really great coming-of-age story with an outstanding performance by Abby Ryder Fortson. The movie doesn't try to hard to be overly dramatic and keeps a good balance with hopeful and light-hearted scenes. And.. oh yeah.. Rachel McAdams is still one of the most beautiful women in het world.

Meh, I thought it would be better than it actually was

This is fine. The movie is at its strongest when it dives into the religious stuff, because it’s the most unique angle this story has to offer. The scenes dealing with puberty felt slightly more bland and predictable, and I think a lot of that stuff is more interestingly captured in a movie like Turning Red. Nevertheless, it has a really sweet tone, it’s sincere and fluffy without ever becoming too sentimental. There’s not a ton of comedy, but the stuff that’s in there hits the mark. Rachel McAdams has the perfect vibe for this type of movie, I also really liked Bennie Safdie and the younger cast. However, the filmmaking is quite a big weak spot. The cinematography and editing feel very anonymous, both are lacking in cinematic quality and personality. The music is also very dull, a lot of it feels like stock coming-of-age movie music. Overall, it’s nothing special and fairly inconsequential, but it makes for good comfort food.
