Based on the book of the same name, this is a touching little movie all about the journey to self-discovery, but more importantly, self-acceptance. While there are a few moments of questionable acting, this movie takes some swings at showing how harsh and damaging of a journey it can be to finally understanding yourself - and it really hits the point hard. (Plus, it takes place in 1987 El Paso, and the boys’ wardrobes are fantastic.)

I had such high hopes for this movie. Excellent casting. Beautifully shot. Acting was ok.

The thing I remembered loving the most were the beautiful relationships between all the characters. I could not feel those connections in the film. Hopefully, the book series will be adapted into a mini TV series, giving every character and moments the space they need.

An enjoyable movie but although it tries it does not quite encapsulate the book. Read the book and the sequel: their story is one of hope in a late 1980s world full of despair and prejudice.

I’ve read the book and was so excited when they had announced a movie adaptation. It was not a disappointment. The story is so sad but also somehow happy. I think the books were still much better but this was a cute adaptation. If only life was this cute.
