Just watched it yesterday for the second time. First time was ten years ago as a kid. Found the DVD in a box. Must say, I'm going to keep it! It's a pretty different Disney film, doesn't really feel like a 'Disney' film in fact.
Atlantis is super cool to be honest.
holy moley, this movie is gorgeous. I like to think about what films like Luca could have been if they had the same passion and story as this one… maybe one day again.
also somehow more greatly reaffirmed my propensity towards lanky brunettes with glasses. it can’t be helped.
I love this animated entry, a Disney non-musical feature film that’s perfectly paced, funny, and reverential to every trope you’ve come to expect. Love it. Love.
If the plot was just a bit better this would be an all timer. The animation is great with some breathtaking scenes, good cast of characters and the general dialogue is fine. Great film to put on when you stay awake to watch Wrestle Kingdom cause the matches ain't appealing but you like watching stuff with friends. It's also quite unique from most Disney films which is something to appreciate. Easy watch, and so close to something incredible.
Excellent.
I had previously heard a fair bit of hype down the years regarding 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' and now, finally, I can understand why. It is very good. My favourite part of it is the animation which is exquisite, especially across acts one and two with the great amount of detail. The characters are cool, while the premise is pretty fascinating.
Michael J. Fox is a superb cast as Milo, he is fantastic in the lead role. Honestly, none of the other voices stand out to me but that's not always a bad thing - especially in this film. There are no huge individual performances, away from Fox, but they all bounce off each other nicely.
The plot is very interesting, brought to life brilliantly by James Newton Howard's terrific score. It's not near the top of my Disney animated favourites, just through process of elimination really, but it certainly isn't majorly far off. It's a fun experience, one I'd recommend you see for yourself if you haven't done so already.
One of the bests of Disney. It would make you feel like you are 10 and reading Julio Verne again.
I really don't know if I like or hate this movie
Like cheeseburger flavored baby food, just because it's formula doesn't mean it's bad (though it may lack heart).
Milo Thatch and Daniel Jackson, both look exactly like each other and both discover Atlantis.
Coincidence?
I THINK NOT!
I simply love this movie. Ever since I first saw it as a kid in cinemas I was captured by its sense for adventure and mystery. It's quite a different Disney film and definitely nothing for younger children as there is a oot of action and also violence. The story, animation and also especially the soundtrack are beautiful and brilliant.
Disappointed in this for a Disney movie. I loved Michael J Fox voicing Milo but the film itself just felt very bland. Didn't keep me interested.
Helga and Kida have definitely woken something within me...
When this came out in 2001, I felt I was too young to appreciate the more adult tone of a Disney movie. It is still very much a family film, but it was "different". Fast forward 20 years later and this still rightfully feels like a classic that brings back nostalgia, even if I did not love it. It was quite enjoyable to revisit, and I surely like it more now than I did then.
Rating: 3/5 - 75% - Worth Watching
this movie was ingrained into my brain since i saw it as a kid, the first scene of kida as a kid to be exact. now i finally took the time to watch it again, and it's as gorgeus as i remember it to be. it was kinda fast paced at times but still incredibly enjoyable nevertheless.
An international submarine expedition uncovers the world's most famous lost civilization, the technologically-advanced society of Atlantis, still kicking after a millennium in isolation. Although we follow the perspective of an eager young scholar, enlisted as a lingual interpreter, the men actually in charge of this voyage don't have the most altruistic of motives. Go figure, right?
Arriving immediately after the creative pinnacle of Disney's 1990s resurgence, Atlantis has something of a bad reputation. It's not Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, and for that it's judged rather harshly. Not that such critiques are unfair: though it's well-stocked with colorful characters and a gorgeously intricate, stylized art direction (Hellboy creator Mike Mignola's influence is readily evident here), the plot is too thin and those worldly supporting characters don't distinguish themselves beyond a simple, superficial level. I found Michael J. Fox distracting in the lead role, too. Some voice actors have the ability to tailor their performance to fit a character, but in this case it seems to go the other way around. Jim Varney, he of Ernest fame, fares better in a throwaway secondary role. In his case, sadly, the film was a posthumous release.
In a strictly visual sense, Atlantis is delightful. The distinct shapes and colors, fluid motion and eclectic, versatile cast are a nice treat for the eyes, even if the occasional blend of CG and hand-drawn animation doesn't always come off without a hitch. From a storytelling perspective, though, it falls short. I kept waiting to be wowed, to find reasons to care, but it never happened. Little more than a thin, inoffensive Jules Verne imitation with a sparkling coat of paint.
Feels like a Disney animated version of Star Gate but with Atlantis.
It's fine but nowhere near the level of the other 90s Disney movies.

Great storyline, a great hero and a great villain, super diverse cast, a stunning underwater world with an amazing princess. I loved it.
