If you plan on slitting your wrists after a movie, then this is the one you're looking for
The most pointless film ever made. Skip this & burn it if you happened to buy it on Dvd/Bluray. This is a movie about a guy moaning about his friends being more successful than himself. The only thing that makes him remotely happy is his son possibly going to Harvard,he thinks that will somehow make the last 13 years of his life valid. The ending was a non ending
Not everybody will buy into Brad's thinking, but for me it was completely relatable. While my life isn't completely crappy, and there is much that I am proud of, I still have those 'what if' feelings. Looking at others, I get all Meg Ryan and wish I could have what they were having. I overthink and wonder what other people think of me. It's envy and insecurity I know, and the thoughts are often out of line with reality. And so it is with Brad's status and the way he looked at his life in this film.
And as is shown in the film through the character of Brad and his philosophical musings, we should all bend our faulty perceptions into something more reasonable. We should stop and smell the roses and be happy for who we are. We should be present in our reality and not worry unduly about what our lives could have been. We should practice gratitude and not dissatisfaction. We shouldn't give a damn about what others think of us. And on that note, I suggest you watch the film. If you relate to my ramblings even a little, then you will get something from the reflections ruminated on throughout the course of this movie. In my opinion, there were moments within of unbridled brilliance. In short, watch it!
I feel bad for the son who has to deal with Brad's wild mood swings, which Brad takes out on said son.
A good one from Ben Stiller, it had a good message to it. Don't try to be better than someone else or be someone else, try to be a better person tomorrow than you were today. Look what you have in life, where you are, what surrounds you before you can say the words I've failed.
Sends a good message to be a better person but not that entertaining of a movie.
I enjoyed Brad’s Status. Was very philosophical. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea. If you enjoyed Mike White’s other work you will enjoy this.
"I'm the only one who's gonna remember that, because people only think of themselves. Nobody cares, you know?"
Troy was only talking about the embarrassing moment Brad caused at the interviewing office, but it reminded Brad of what his rich friend said about not viewing him as a competitor, ever. People didn't care how successful he was or what he had, in the end what mattered was just him being happy. Learning that his old professor had died made him realize that life goes on and flies away, and it all came down to understanding that instead of comparing himself to others and wanting to have it all, he needed to notice all the good things he had and just enjoy life.
Troy himself is a chill guy who isn't pressured by success rates and in the end he just wants to do what he likes.
It's a good message and a good plot, but 2 things make this movie worse than it would have been.
1- Ben Stiller is a really terrible actor. He made the same staring face the whole time and it almost felt like he was creepily watching his son at some parts, he even gave that same look at the last scene when he was looking at Troy as he slept.
2- The annoying narrator voice. This diary style of story-telling by the main character himself is becoming really cliche and it should only be used for about 5 minutes into the movie. If not, it at least shouldn't be overused and it should be done at the right time (like in Forrest Gump) and the important thoughts should be understood in other ways. This is a movie, not a book in first person. "Show, don't tell" right?
My glowing review of this film is very personal. While I don't relate to exactly what Brad is going through as a 40-something year old man with children and friends of varying quality I can definitely relate to a struggle. This film explored that struggle in a very unique and subtle way. Bravo. It isn't a great film but it is trying to tackle a very personal issue.
Ben Stiller walking and philosophizing (...)
Definitely one of the few surprises of 2017! Great directing, nice script and superb performances from Stiller and Abrams.
A beautiful analysis over life, family, job, choices, future and all the different ways to see the world.

16 minutes of whining about other people being more successful than him was 16 minutes more depressing than I needed to be. I wanted to kill myself after 15 minutes...it took me 1 minute of depression trying to find the off button.
