Charlotte 2021

It is an important biography on the Holocaust, but it was too ingenuous and thin.

Like an educational comic to teach history in middle school, Charlotte is cute but feels 2-dimensional.

Charlotte is an illustrated biopic of painter Charlotte Salomon, a Jewish artist who painted in Germany and France during the Second World War and is credited by many as creating the first graphic novel (Leben? oder Theater?: Ein Singspiel / Life? or Theater?: A Song-play consisting of 769 individual works).

The whole time I was watching this movie, I kept thinking, "Loving Vincent ruined animated features about artists for me" and then I got home and learned it was the same studio. :person_facepalming:

But I stand by my gut feeling, because where Loving Vincent took advantage of an artist's style to expose layer upon layer of Van Gogh and his work, Charlotte looks like every other animated film and the generic style in no way reflects the creativity of Charlotte Salomon.

The film is interesting if unsurprising, important if uninspiring and a nice picture (if a little too focused on her love life) of a person who could've been a significant artist of it hadn't been for hate.
