I totally did not expect this movie to be so awesome. As an added bonus it has a great soundtrack!

One of my favourite films of the last decade.
It's not perfect but it's got so much charm and heart to it that I absolutely love it!
The cast have great chemistry, with several putting in performances that are super memorable. And anything with Oliver Platt in it gets a bump in rating.
The food is beautiful and the music is sensational.
The small drawbacks - casting Sofia Vergara and Scarlett Johansson as love interests is a stretch in credibility (well I would if I could too right?), the first 50 mins over stays its welcome by a few mins before the second half goes supernova.
The criticism I see for Twitter etc. I can't gel with that. The social media and the son is one of the best parts of the film.
Find me a film with as touching a story as this because we all need a little 'pick me up' like this in our lives.

I was really surprised by the charming experience this movie provided.
The plot was a bit cliche towards the end, but I can't fault it too much. It's obvious this was meant to be a feel-good movie and it succeeds magnifically in doing exactly that. The rhythm of the story is always very upbeat and I really liked that. Even the drama and the low point in the protagonist's story are not dragged for too long, the movie just moves along with a satisfying pace.
Whoever chose the music that accompanies the whole film did an exceptionally good job. The song reflects the mood and the place of what's on screen in that moment. Chapeau!
The cast had a tangible chemistry. From the minor roles such as Johansson and Hoffman to more prominent ones like Leguizamo, everyone was really good. Favreau shined as Carl, showing the passion a chef feels for the food he cooks.
Now, the food. The food is the real co-protagonist. You may think the movie is about Carl and his son. It's not. It's about Carl and his food. Carl can't be happy if he's not happy with what he cooks as a chef. Everything else comes later. As soon as he gains his gastronomic freedom, he also gains a bond with his son, through the food.
The cinematography of the cooking scenes was on point. It can only be described as food porn. Not only that, but they managed to capture the controlled chaos that is any cooking business.
Overall, great cast, really nice cinematography, excellent soundtrack, the story could have been better. 8/10

Sure the movie was filled with Cliches about a father and a distant son. But the atmosphere of the movie was like a party! Crank the music up, start cooking in the kitchen, and just relax with a cold one. That’s how this movie is meant to be enjoyed.

The feeling you get after finishing this movie can't be explained
After directing the three blockbusters (Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens) Jon Favreau comes back with this lovely and simple story called Chef. I wasn't sure what to expect from it but something told me that I would have a good time watching it. It's a delightful comedy/drama with absolutely delicious moments, literally! We can definitely feel that this film was a project developed with a lot of passion from Jon Favreau and what I love more about it, is its "Indie" feeling.
Jon Favreau directed, acted and wrote this story about Chef Carl Casper who is a very respected Chef that works at a well known restaurant in L.A. When he received a bad review from a food critic (what leaded to other disastrous situations) he gets fired. That made in reconsider some decisions in his life and he starts thinking about taking another course in his life. He ends up in Miami with a food truck by the name of "El Jefe" serving a lot of cuban dishes.
One thing that I liked to see was how Favreau wanted to portray a friendly relationship between a divorced couple, that is a rare thing to see in a film. The relationship between father and son is also very affective and warm to see. The way he develops Carl make us care about the character and that's another bonus on the film. This is a film that felt real although it has some predictable moments.
The performances were very good! Jon Favreau has a great and very honest performance, he was great to see that he is actually a pretty good actor and he was able to connect with the audience. The supporting roles are very entertaining and funny. Sofía Vergara doing something different than usual, a more calm and down to earth woman was good to see. The little boy that plays their son was also very good. The rest of the cast, John Leguizamo, Bobby Canavale, Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt were all good on their roles. Robert Downey Jr.'s five minutes on screen were absolutely wonderful. His scenes were very funny, that guy is awesome! Dustin Hoffman has very few scenes on screen too but it's always great to see him.
It celebrates the love for food and that is passed through the screen. All of the scenes involving cooking are shot in an gorgeous way! At those scenes is all about the food, it's the food that's important and that is a very cool aspect of the film because with that Favreau was able to turn all of the dishes and the ingredients into characters of the film too.
Chef spreads a lot of charm and heart all over the place! You will left the theater with a feel good vibe and I bet that by the end of it you will be hungry like I was!!
Let me tell you a story. It is a love story actually. There were two lovers: Apple and Twitter, and they loved each other so much that they made a movie for everyone to see how great they are. And how well they fit together...
No, but seriously, this 100 minute twitter advertisement is just terrible. This is a movie about a talented chef, who is a real a*hole as a father. He gets upset about a review written about him. Also, his (another a*hole) boss (you can't get a decent ad without hiring a big star like Dustin Hoffman) that doesn't let him be artistic with the food. So he goes indie and starts his own "food truck".
There are some good lines here and there but nothing special with the script. Overall, the acting, the writing and the directing are very generic.
I really hate being like the critic in the movie, but this movie was done to promote stuff and make you feel good about it, it wasn't art or even a decent flick. I stopped watching it after 50 minutes. If you can watch something else, better do it.

That is the best looking grilled cheese I’ve ever seen. The movie is an easy watch and made me hungry. Nothing groundbreaking but something good to relax to.
It was predictable, lacked any real complexity and I feel like it is a few hours of my life that I'll never get back. Well acted, but just too much of a beige story and very cookie cutter. Meh.

Trust me you don't want to see this movie with an empty stomach you are going to feel painnn..6.8/10 from me it could do wayy better if plot was more complicated in second part of 45 minutes.
Chef has a good story that could've been turned into a wonderfully great movie. But that outstanding story is wasted in such a bad way, that the movie is merely mediocre. Sofia Vergara being a huge miscast, and the whole movie kinda being a twitter ad doesn't help the movie either, but compared to the problems of unsuccessfully transferring the story to the screen those are just mere details that don't really bug me that much.

What a great movie! I've been putting this off for a year or so now, I don't know why I was so hesitant to watch it. First off, what a nice change of pace for Sofia Vergara. I'm a big fan of hers regardless, but it's just nice to see her cast in a role that doesn't require her to be crazy and loud. Jon Favreau is great and I love how after the big blow up on the critic and he goes to Miami, it's just up and up and up. It's a great, feel good movie. There is no end of act two things-can't-get-any-worse moment. That may sound like I'm being snobby and sarcastic, like oy it's not following the rules, but it was very comforting and fun to see him get close with his son and not have to deal with the obligatory "you lied to me!" scene when he gets cold feet or something. They get close, his food truck takes off...he ALMOST runs of, scared of disappointing his son again, but then he watches the one second videos his son made and boom, everything falls into place. It was a delight. I want to watch again knowing it's smooth sailing. Also, I GOTTA get the version of Sexual Healing they sing along to, it was so catchy!
So, a talented chef's ten-years-late-to-the-party ambitions get suppressed by an "evil" boss (who's actually just a businessman, being a businessman) and he decides to "shine" by... becoming a sandwich robot? :D Really? Also, what was the point in involving Johansson and Downey, if they couldn't afford them for more than 5 minutes of screen time? All that chemistry between Carl and Molly, and then he goes ahead and re-marries his ex, without even any mention of Molly? I don't even.
Could this movie be any plainer? Putting it bluntly.
P.S. No offense to those in the sandwich industry.
totally worth watching--story is cliched, acting is very solid, soundtrack is incredible. The guest stars give this at least one bonus point. I did not really enjoy watching this as much as my wife did, but I did think that overall it was a charming little story...

Starts strong with delicious food porn and interesting premise, but unfortunately after an hour or so, it's feelgood intentions are cliched with a cheap ending attached.. I will try one of those cubanos though ,hmmm...

If you are of a vegetarian persuasion, the start of this film is really likely to scare you off (you see them butchering the carcase of a pig in the kitchen).
I really loved this film. Considering it's directed, co-produced, written by, and starring Jon Favreau, the true standouts in this are Emjay as his son, and John Leguizamo as friend and line chef.
I came out of this film craving a multi-cheese toasted sandwich.
Also, I really want to get hold of the soundtrack for this film. It's truly a standout.

Chef has made me appreciate Jon Favreau more as an actor and the supporting cast John Leguizamo & Bobby Canavale complemented the movie very well.
Leguizamo was really a stand out and the young kid was great. It was his first movie and he wasn't the slightest bit annoying.
Chef is a total feel good movie if you're looking for something to cheer you up this is the movie to pick.
I was going to give this 4/5 but I really can't think of many gripes I had with this film. If I were to be nit picky Johanssons character was kind of useless and wasn't really needed but overall I unexpectedly loved Chef.
This is probably the best I have seen Favreau.

The chemistry between Favreau, Leguizamo and Emjay Anthony is amazing; just so natural.
It's the best thing Leguizamo, who I generally run hot and cold on, has done in a very long time. Perfect casting of a fantastic film.
Crank up the wonderful soundtrack, get in the kitchen and cook something!
