THE GOOD:
The Devil All the Time already proved that Tom Holland is capable of more than web-slinging and has a natural ability to bring out his darker side. Cherry cements that, even if his performance is hardly anything he’ll win any acting awards for.
The soundtrack is likeably laid-back and catchy and puts a weird spin on the bizarrely depressing storyline.
There are times when the Russo brother’s vision and direction are as sharp and great as we’ve come to expect from their MCU work, such as during the dynamic war sequences or throughout most of the tensely edited final act.
What Cherry does well is slowly build up the pressure around the main character, leading to his slow and difficult descent into depression, anxiety and delinquency. This process feels convincing and at times, painfully palpable. There is a clear sense of things going from bad to worse, which helps to maintain interest throughout the film.
THE BAD:
This film is all over the place visually. It’s like the Russo brothers had a hard time deciding what kind of visual style they wanted to go for. The colour palette shifts all the time; the cinematography and editing keep changing in style and it’s almost impossible to keep up with the film due to the lack of consistency.
While the overall story is simple enough and the script tackles themes that need to be brought up more, it feels as if the emotional exploration is incomplete, as the movie doesn’t allow itself time to stop and contemplate things before moving onto the next chapter in Cherry’s life.
The people surrounding Cherry feel very one-dimensional and do not bear much impact on the overall story. They are there just to flesh out the script and avoid making this a one-man show. They show up and they disappear again, with Clara Bravo (great name!) being the sole exception. This, coupled with the almost sensational life story presented by the Russos, makes it difficult to form an emotional attachment to this film.
I’m not completely convinced this film is a good depiction of US war veterans, their PTSD and drug/alcohol/mental health/relationship problems, even if it feels mostly realistic.
After everything that the film offers its audience, it is unclear exactly what it is trying to tell us and the conclusion could leave many viewers feeling unsatisfied.
THE UGLY:
I’d love for there to exist a Shitty Bank in the real world.
THE VERDICT:
While in no way particularly original, memorable or even emotional, Cherry isn’t quite as bad as most people make it out to be.
56% = :heavy_minus_sign: = UGLY
It gives Requiem for a Dream a run for its money.
I liked the performances of Tom and Ciara but I felt they were the only characters in the movie I could remember. Really sums this movie up. Forgetful. Didn't need Tom speaking to the camera. Movie was way too long for what it is. It's a real shame because I think the potential was there for a great story.
Cherry is so hard to watch I even had to close my eyes in some scenes.
But Tom and Ciara's performance is flawless and definitely makes you empathize with the characters.
Well made and brilliantly acted film. The story was very depressing and it‘s not a movie I would watch a second time. The ending scene was amazing though and I especially liked the soundtrack.
Deserves more than the 67% at the time of my review. It's worth your while to watch but be aware that it's heavy. It has given me a lot more empathy for the type of life they ended up with. A tear-jerker at some points too.
Tom Holland, I appreciate your efforts, but man the Russo's did you dirty with their music video directing.
A movie that went straight into my heart. So sad movie, but the reality. And without saying to much. För me it really hitted hard. And what a performance he does in this movie. You are much more then just our friendly spider man. Your future as a actor has just begun. Amazing movie! And the way it touched me was something special.
Has a indie vibe the story told although not necessarily new, made you curious to find out if the main character finds himself...and in someway the ending provided that.
Fuck, I'll watch any fucking Tom Holland movie and fucking love it.
Fucking loved this one.
Abysmal, pretentious boredom. Excessive use of Van Morrison and a sappy score. Cherry as the main character’s name is completely moronic. Also, he’s so butthurt over his college girlfriend saying she wants to move away and break up, that he starts ruining his own life and eventually her’s.
This could’ve been titled “Butthurt Burnout the Military Moron”. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, please stick to comedy and Marvel movies.
This just screams out how f*cked up America has a hard on for the military. Ever since 9/11 (and even before with Vietnam et al) it seems like fighting for your country is a "must" The land of the free and "this is the best country ever" bravado has always pissed me off! There are plenty of other countries where "we" are free, Most Americans don't think or even care that there are any other types of opinions out there.
I love that this movie tackled loads of hard to talk about subjects that are going on around right now from PTSD to the oxy epidemic.
Check out the George Carlin stand up from how shell shock evolved into the term PTSD. It's hilarious! That man is a legend.
Ultimately what I loved most about this movie is that it is such a well-done anti-war movie. In actuality all war movies are anti-war even if they try not to be.
If you don't like this anti-American rant then just to let you know I've lived here since I was five years old... so I was raised American,
The best thing for people to do in my opinion is to get out there and experience different cultures. In essence we are all the same. I've have so much fun with people from all types of backgrounds and countries getting drunk or what have you. Yeah, I'm kinda drunk now which is probably why I'm on this review kick!
Anyway, I loved this f'n movie and if you think otherwise I hope you find another anti-war movie that touches you!
War sucks and then you die. hahaha
The Russo Brothers' Apple TV+ original film "Cherry" showcases their attempt to break away from their established image, but the result is a disjointed and unengaging film. Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo deliver strong performances, but the movie suffers from its ambitious and stylistic approach to tackling heavy themes such as war, addiction, and societal failures. The film's use of chapter shifts in tone and genre does not work and the character of Nico's framing device adds unnecessary exposition. Overall, "Cherry" falls short in its lofty aspirations and fails to leave a lasting impression.
I thought that in the 21st century it would not be so easy to rob banks in the United States. The epilogue is pure science fiction
Sure, it’s overlong and it drags in places at times. However, there are many good moments within the film, anchored by another great performance from Holland. Tighter pacing would have served the film well, but this is still a cherry that is worth biting into.
This movie was a constant downhill ride. Not the "fun" roller coaster kind of downhill, but a descent into a more and more depressing and sad life.
This is not to say it's a bad movie. In fact, I think it's quite good. A few decades ago I would have liked this better, but this kind of movie is no longer my cup of tea.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
I'm loving these new roles from Tom Holland and he's definitely upped his game with this strong and challenging role with a deep impact and loved the plot, It kept me hooked start to finish with plenty of entertainment even though the running time was high. A good picture from the Russo Brothers.
It’s almost like the Russo brothers saw what people’s main critique of their Marvel films was, and thought: well fuck you, we can be stylish if we want to.
So instead of doing another Marvel film, they opted to make something that will remind you more of a Michael Bay or a bad Danny Boyle film.
Like, the directing is really annoying and excessive.
Also, I think there’s a bit of a disconnect between how dumb this character acts versus how overintelligent Holland and the Russos are trying to portray him through the (unnecessary) narration and dialogue.
A shame really, because I think the script checks a lot of boxes, and the cinematography is certainly better than any of their Marvel films.
The score isn’t half bad either.
The most positive thing I can say is this: I like that the film is at least trying something different.
It’s just a shame that the horrendous directing constantly takes you out of the story.
5/10
Too long. Kinda depressing. Liked the bank names tho
Cherry is a hard movie to decipher and I get that there is sort of some epiphany at the end but all you take away from this godamn movie is don't join the army. Maybe its Holland and Russos fucking up but I gotta see if the author, Nico Walker did that shit too.
[Apple tv+] The Russo Brothers' first attempt to make a film about anti heroes instead of superheroes. The result is a cocktail shaker of styles that shows all the cinema they have seen (Kubrick, Scorsese, Stone ...). But they forget to find their own voice, underlined by a flimsy script that doesn't know how to build the characters. "Cherry" is a mainstream that looks like an indie film, a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Really enjoyed this movie and rated it much higher than the general feedback seen. An epic story of youth and coming of age, with love and addiction. Enjoyed it from start to finish. Both lead actors were excellent in this. 9/10
I really enjoyed watching. Great story and performance
I don't understand all the hate from the reviewers. Dark and bleak. Well acted!
Other than that needle scene which was brutal there wasn't really anything special here.
It's essentially Requiem for a Dream with a PTSD/veteran touch.
If this was 30 - 45 minutes shorter I think I would have enjoyed it more.
This one hit home, even had me shedding tears by the end. A lot to go away and think about and for that, I am thankful. Powerful score aswell. Great watch.

as time went on, i felt more and more sick
very graphic (and unnecessary) scenes
