Citizen X 1995

[HBO Max] An interesting description of the investigations around the serial killer Andrei Chikatilo that is indebted to his time in the stiff representation of Russia, but at the same time makes good use of the background of the transformation of the former USSR through details such as the degradation of the large billboard of Lenin on the street. There is a deft description of the murders in images that reveal the brutality without showing it explicitly, but also an irony that is especially revealing about the inability of the police to catch a serial killer who was not accepted to exist in a country like Russia.

Excellent film. Well-written, -paced, and -acted, the main characters are engaging and Jeffrey DeMunn is remarkable as the killer. I highly recommend this - not just for lovers of true crime dramas, but for fans of good psychological drama in general.

A little overacted to get the perceived ‘culture’ of the Soviet Union correct but otherwise interesting
