Entertaining action flick about the battle between good & evil with some really nice special effects!
Some decent action but I was bored for most of the movie.
Okay, it's very complicated for me to rate or review this movie. This movie has very many flaws. It's not a 'i-want-to-be-loved-by-anyone'- Movie. But I like it and its over-the-top ideas a lot.
If i had to make a Pro-Con-List, the Con Part would be large. The good ideas safes it. A what the hell...here is my Pro-Con-List:
++ Keanu Reeves often fits the tough Guy Attitude (Even if he is not that Jason Statham-Type)
++ Rachel Weisz, Constantines Friends, Tilda Swinton and even LaBeouf are good
++ The Ending + Showdown - This is one of my Favorite Movie Endings. Badas as f**k
-- Too often you think the Director and his Writers were saying: 'Yeah, that's ok. But(!) what if we make it 10 Times bigger ?". They want top at far too often.
-- Script, Story, Plotholes. Way to often they do the same thing to make a "cool looking scene".
Okay the Con list is not that big, but i don't want to spoil anything.

Keanu Reeves is a wonderful actor, and is shining in this fantastic movie.
Having not read the comics it is tough to understand the plot in detail unless you graduated in the Vatican so I stick to superficial elements that stood out for me. Keanu is cool as always but he did not deserve the miracle cancer cure. I was ready to watch more exorcism / demon huting stuff instead of the good vs evil whatever. The film have reminded me here and there about the Dresden Files which in my opinion would have long deserved a long series. Tilda Swinton was a terrifyingly great choice as the sexless Gabriel. I could not for the life of me decode who the hell the Midnite character was played by Djimon Hounsou. This is tilting between a 6 and 7 but in the end the coolness factor and the Harry Dresden overtones swings it to the better rating.
Peter Stomare in this as Lucifer, mastered the role. Keanu & Rachel Weiss were magnificent. This is a deep movie that I thought it would be raking in the awards!
But then there are many movies that I was not impressed with that receive Oscars!! ..
I definitely recommend this movie!
I was somewhat enjoying the movie up until the incredibly boring third act. This concept is better suited for a television series, so we can see more cool demon-hunting and less deliberation about yet another evil entity that wants to open a portal to earth. Keanu was also quite sloppy in this, there are so many incredible apsects to the lore but Keanu sounds and looks like he doesn't give a shit about any of it despite being someone who wants to go to heaven so badly that he spends all of his time hunting demons. An actor who can properly convey emotions would've really elevated this movie.
I must sound dumb by saying this, but why this movie haven't at least an indication of an Oscar? It's such an amazing movie with such great characters!
Keanu Reeves played John very well, Gabriel impressed me with his insanity, Rachel Weisz was perfect as always and Lucifer was SO scary and funny. I loved him.
This is one of my favorite movies. Definitely.

Well that sucked.. the great actors couldn’t save this movie for me.
@ Rey El King - Ditto on the Constantine sequel tip! This is the one Keanu should have done instead of "Matrix Revelations". Perfect casting all around. Tilda Swinton's genetics are as unparalleled as her acting, since, she seemingly hasn't aged a day since this was filmed. I can't think of any actor who can pull off the androgenous vibes better than she can, and, her trying to do good by being evil, yet in the end, realizing that she may not have quite thought this thing through, was amusing. (BLAM! Yeah, that's called PAIN!)
The chemistry between Keanu and Rachel just worked, and, I'm glad they didn't go the cliched "now that that's over, let's hook up" route, although John in a way got a happy(ish) ever after with a new set of air pumps and Chas getting airborne. Djimon Hounsou is a welcome addition as always, and Peter Stormare's portrayal of Lucifer as the absentee Father / Prince of Darkness, but, "we've still got rules and shizz", was an inspired choice. (now..., GO to your ROOM!)
All in all a very enjoyable film, even upon a rewatch (or two)

He isn’t British or blonde, but he is entertaining. This was before all the comic book world building and it is nice to feel a contained hellish story with some cool concepts. I am looking forward to the recently announced sequel!

I always forget how much I love Shia LaBeouf in this. One of his best characters. The interaction between Chad and Constantine is just so perfect.
Tilda Swinton is fantastic as Gabriel. The way she and Constantine interact is spectacular. She has some really good lines.
Peter Stormare does a really good job as Lucifer as well. There is the right amount of savagery and sophistication/class.
Even though Keanu Reeves version of John Constantine does not have any likeness to the comic character he's supposed to be, both the story and the looks of this little gem are how the old comic kid in me envisioned it back in my comic collecting days. I actually owned all of the Hellblazer series up until Mike Carey vacated the writing position in 2006, and this movie is very much in the vein of that series.
Great acting all around, and I have already mentioned the story and the looks, so this is well worth investing a couple of hours in. Especially if you are a fan of the comics. But then you will probably have seen this one already, wouldn't you?!!? ;)

Great watch. I had seen it before but didn't remember much about it, so I gave it another watch recently and enjoyed it all over again. For a movie that could have been disastrously cheesy, this was actually quite good (I didn't say "believable"); the acting was - IMO - above average and the storyline definitely a neat twist. They couldn't have picked a better person to cast as "Lucifer", in my opinion; Peter Stormare has long been one of my favorite actors and he didn't fail to deliver in this one. As always, in the right role, Keanu Reeves delivers a great performance and did so here. Even though I've now seen this twice, it ranks as a "watch it again", it was that enjoyable.
Catching up before it's leaving HBO Max. This film has some pretty interesting ideas about heaven and hell but the final product is muddy. My main problem with it is the screenplay and pacing. The story often skips over things previously touched on and they add some unnecessary things to it making it even harder to follow. The audio is irritatingly quiet in some parts. It also lacks good action. There are some but they're not as exciting as they're intended to. It just feels off and awkward for the most parts. That said, there are some fantastic imagery and interesting designs in here. The horror aspect is nicely done and the poorly aged cgi adds silly charm that I really enjoy. None of the characters stand out but they did a pretty good job except Shia Labeouf. He literally did nothing to the story. Overall, it's not great but a fun watch I guess.
Decent binge for a sleepless night.

As an on-again, off-again follower of the Vertigo comic this is based upon, I was all geared up to hate it mightily before it had even spun up in the DVD player. With that said, it fares somewhat better than I'd expected. It isn't a raging success story, but it's not a tragic insult to the rich, lengthy source material either.
Keanu Reeves is a horrible choice for the lead, no doubt about that. Where the funny book Constantine is a complex, witty, bitter but charismatic subculture hero, Keanu's interpretation is as nuanced as a bag of bricks. I don't know how much I can fault the actor for that - after all, he's been playing dress-up with the same character for two decades now - but regardless of where the blame lies, he lacks the unspoken authenticity that role needs to get off the ground.
Fortunately, the blow is softened somewhat by a dynamite intro sequence that may as well have been ripped straight from the pages of the comic and a decent, if indulgent, central storyline. With a full-blown war between heaven and hell at its core, it would've been very easy to get overly adventurous with this film's scope, but it wisely maintains a short focal range and that keeps things mostly grounded. It won't be finding a home on anyone's top ten list, and it's not easy to look past Keanu being Keanu (with Shia freaking Labeouf crammed in as a throwaway sidekick), but the tone is right and the special effects work is a grand success. Not nearly what it could've been, but also not what I feared it would become.
Constantine is an underwhelming action film that has a bigger vision than it’s able to deliver on. In the cosmic war between demons and angels, Constantine keeps the balance by sending demons back to hell when they cross the line. The film has a strong cast that consists of Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, and Peter Stormare. Unfortunately Reeves and Weisz deliver weak and uninspired performances, but it’s almost made-up for by Swinton and Stormare; whose performances are outstanding. Another issue with the film is its mythology, which isn’t sufficiently explained to fully understand the story. Constantine has a unique vision, but isn’t able to realize it.
Still a great film with some decent action and love him as a DC character and keanu was a great choice.
